Towing '93 Typhoon for Move

Hey Guys,

Need advice on towing my Ty about 240 miles. I have the engine in and should get the Trans in this weekend. But I will be moving before I'm done and I can't drive 2 cars anyway.

First of all, do U think that one of those V shaped Tow Bars on my GN trailer hitch is reasonably safe to tow with ? They've got two rigid arms which U would attach to the front of the TY and then U add safety chains. Not sure how fast I'll be able to go w one of those. Don't know if I would have to connect the 2 sets of brake lights ?


The other tow hitch option is one of those dollies that U put the front wheels on with the rear wheels on the ground. There I'm wondering if I should have the Propshaft disconnected ? I would think that I should leave it disconnected.

Some of the dollies take all 4 wheels off the ground. Then there's no problem.

Yes, I've towed w my GN before - NBD. Particularly in this case, which will be a flat 200-250 miles.

Ya gotta watch towing much w a Turbo car. To keep the turbo from kicking in all the time, U need to downshift to minimize that.

I won't do what I did the last time - tow a 5 x 12 trailer from LA, CA to Corpus Christi, TX in the middle of summer. That was a bit scary and on the edge, but I knew I was pulling the engine anyway, so I gambled and had no problems.

This tow, on the other hand, is a piece of cake.

Forget the towbar option. That's a quick way to tear up a lot of stuff.

Regarding the dolly option. IMO Either lift all four wheels off the ground or don't tow it. Especially that far. You "could" remove the rear propshaft and lift the front off the ground.


It's hard to believe that someone would tow with a GN let alone even consider towing a Ty with the GN. :roll:

If you can afford to own and maintain a GN and a Ty why can't you afford a truck is my real question.

Daron towed his Sy to the nats behind the motor house with a front wheel dolly.
He removed the rear driveshaft and wired it up out of the way.
No need to disconnect the propshaft as nothing will turn but the rear end.

I would find a co worker with a real truck and pay them to pull the dolly for you while you drive the GN.

Surely there is a felow syty'r or GN guy close by that doesn't want to see a tragedy strike.

I just trailered my ty from Chicago to SC and even with a Yukon, you could really notice a Ty is on a trailer. I used a tandem axle tralier from U haul. I'm guessing you're gonna feel the weight of that Ty behind your GN.

Ok, U guys convinced me to get a dolly, hopefully a 4 wheel dolly, and not use a towbar. I would just do the whole move w a U-Haul myself, but then my other car is still back at the 1st house, and I have to find some way to get back there to drive it back.

This is what happens when your field of endeavor collapses and U end up out on the road for the last few years. But then, I've never been a quitter.
