Think my front DIFF went out

I put it back in yesturday and it stayed in its parking spot all night. Today, I was out driving aorund and as I went along, I started to hear a wierd humm/grinding sound. At first I couldnt tell where it was coming from but then as it got louder sounded like it was behind the dash board. Then it strated making wierd sounds when I turned, not CV clicking but semi-loud thuds or thumps. So I got home and parked the truck, left for about two hours came home and it was out in the middle of the parking lot. I dont think there is anything wrong with the tcase casue I opened it up when I had the trans out and everythign looked tits. Plus, the diff has been whining for some time now. I did top it off with fluid this morning but I guess it was too late.

When you turn sharp do the front tires chirp? I have those same problems, but no grinding/humming yet.

First off, start using your E-brake. Your neighbors are going to hate you when your truck finally rolls into one of their vehicles.

Second, have you looked at the fluid in the diff?

I can tell that the bearing in my wife's Ty on the drivers side has some play to it. I plan on taking the front diff out of my Naked Ty and checking it out and putting it in hers along with the new gilbert prop shaft.
Sorry your having trouble with yours... where can you get a "Good" rebuilt unit?

All the front axels in ours are new...

Im going to build mine myself. The neighbors can blow me, they blast thier rap all the time and always have 18 million cars at thier house. I did not see the fluid no, but it has pretty much all leaked out. I put about a quart in there yesturday morning. Also, with the propshaft off, you can turn the yolk(or whatever you call it) a good 1-1 1/2" before the wheels move. Maybe thats normal but my first thoguht is that it wasnt.

You might want to check and see if the passenger axle shaft has slipped out of your front diff axle tube. Sometimes the C clip on the shaft would give, allowing the shaft slide out about an inch. This could cause the gears at the end of the shaft to grind and possibly allow the truck to drift while in park (similiar to what would happen if you removed your proshaft). If the grinding hasn't done too much damage you may be able to slide the shaft back into the diff. If it pops out again, you will have to replace the C clip.

No shit...I assume I have to open the diff up still though right? I started to take it out today, what a PITA. Thak god for Myclone because I read some posts I searched on and he had mentioned how to get the top nut and bolt out. Even know ing that info it is still a megabitch.

How is this? Your saying that the axle can walk out of the tube enough to skip splines? Is it obvious? What do I need to look for? Also how does the CV let the axle walk out that far? I've been chaseing some noise and now I'm gona have to check this. If I put a prybar/big screwdriver behind the axle/cv flange could I force it out by hand?

So it looks like the c-clip on thge driver side came off. While removing the diff, the shaft just fell off. The splines are trashed. Im sure the rest of it is on hte way out anyway since its been whining for over a year now.

What was your truck doing? What kind of noise was it making. I'm trying to figure out mine. Mines clunking when I take off and sometimes when I slow down. Also when it shifts. Brand new CVs so its not that. I have an extra axle and T case just dont want to change the wrong one.

Its probably the chain in your Tcase.

Not the T case. Its was the same as yours. I was ready to pull the T case today and crawled under the front axle and pryed the driver side axle right out of the carrier. Popped out about 1" and really didnt take that much pressure to pop it out when the wheel was turned sharp. Well I replace the front axle today with a spare I had laying around. Problem solved
Now for replacing the C clip. My axle is fine and the C clip was still on the axle shaft just collasped letting it walk out. Anyone replace the C clip before? Do I have to split the Diff? Looks like the axle shaft almost touches the spider gear pin (looking down into the carrier) can you just put a new C clip on the axle shaft and push it back into the carrier? Looks like the only way to me?

Yes, but you will want to examine the condition of the spines on the shaft. If they are too bad from any grinding, you may have too replace the shaft.
