Tangle with a Z06

Glad that I spent over an hour an a half cleaning up the truck before going out cruising today. Wouldn't want to represent the syty community in a negative light ;). In the six years that I owned my truck, I have NEVER got to mess with a vette. They are either going the other way, I can't get beside one or the driver is an old dude who has zero interest in running :( . Well, all that changed today.

I turn off the highway and am heading into town when I see a GORGEOUS red vette coming up quick in the passing lane. As it gets closer, it slows quite a bit and the driver is REALLY checking me out. He gets right beside me and I can see it's a young guy prolly late 20's or early 30's. And the car is badged Z06... Well, he gives a HUGE smile and and ever bigger thumbs up  ! I did the same and he slowly passes me and I drop in behind him to pass a car in my lane. After we pass the car, he drops into the right lane and I romp it and vent 16 psi right at his door :p . He laughs and nods a big "HELL YA!". He responds by romping it too to demonstrate what big HP can do when it isn't lacking traction. The car practically "launched" from a 50 MPH roll  . The exhaust sounded WICKED, that vette was NASTY!

Well we finally catch a light and he ended up behind me due to slower traffic in his lane. There were three cars in front of me but, that didn't prevent me from giving him a little "show" ;) . I could see him clearly in my rearview. When he saw me rise up out of my seat to try and put the brake pedal through the floor while the front of my truck rose from brake torquing it, he got a "OH HELL YES!" look on his face. He knew exactly what was up.

Sytys have always been referred to as "stoplight warriors" and I had every intention to show him why. The light went green and I let the cars in front on me get about one hundred feet out before ripping out of the hole with 7 psi in a perverse display of torque and traction that defies belief on the street. Usually I launch with 5 psi and I had some wheel spin before I hooked up. But when I did, I was GONE and he had and even bigger smile on his face once he caught up to me. He ended up beside me again and said that my launch was "bad ass"!

Beyond that, we got to run once from a 40 MPH roll and there was NO doubt who won that match... Needless to say, I will be using twice as much toilet paper now that I have two bung holes  . Funny thing was before that run, I did a quick "who's behind me" look (Johnny Law?) and saw there was a red 'stang behind us wanting some action I guess. When we both went WOT, that 'stang was an object in both our rearviews getting smaller  . I caught back up to him and was cruising beside him and told him that I "didn't want any of that from a roll!" and how SICK that car was. He just smiled and gave me the thumbs up again. We ended up parting and never got to go from a dig :( . Anywho it made my night to tangle with a BAD ASS car with a VERY COOL owner who gave the owner of a 14 year old "pick 'em up truck" props! :D

Cool run in, prolly a better chance running a ZO6 over a regular C5 since you know the guys that got the Z got it because of the power. Every schmo around here has a vette, kinda sucks, I don't even bother looking anymore.

Very true.

I was sitting at a stoplight in my Camaro one night, had 2 of my friends in it, we were just coming back from eating somewhere. And this red Vette pulls up next to us with the windows rolled down. Its a mid 50's lady in it blasting country. Well, when there was a pause in her music, one of my friends yells out (just being stupid) "wow, look its a slow vette." I didnt even look over at her, I wasnt in the mood to race, light when green she got out and just laid on the gas, it was funny to see a 50's year old lady none the less get on it. :D

Yeah when I am in my Camaro I get mixed results when I try racing a Vette. More often than not, standard C5 guys will give me attitude. The one Z06 I raced rolled into it with me at a decently high speed and he got by me no problem back when my car was stock with just a cutout. I pulled up next to him and he was smiling. I told him that I knew what I was getting into and I wanted to see him walk. He had a Corsa cat back and an intake. Sounded awesome goin by me. Coolest Vette dude ever.

Only car I've ever lost to was an 01 Z06, and that was when my Sy was pretty much bone stock. My next car will be an '02 Z06, the sound of the LS6 gives me wood. Heck, I'd buy a Z just for the sweet exhaust note. Couple of mods and you're over 500HP with looks, handling, and all-star performance. Good race story.

I would literally give one of nuts to bum on the street for a Z06. I think they are the most gorgeous Vette ever. I used to think I wanted a vert but screw the vert. The Z06 is jsut badass IMO. Ive driven a few and they are a blast. Prettymuch perfect handling, awsome acceleration and scary topend. My only complaint...uh...maybe not.

Let me just assure you that after having driven one, they pull with a vengeance. If you ever get the chance like I did, do it. It was sick.

Just my 2 cents but my best friend has one. They are Kick but! We were coming back from the track the other day and we caught a light. He left a tad before me then I caught him by a fender but after the 1/8 mile mark it was all over for me. My car is having problems on the top end now anyway, but the Z06's do sound sweet when they pass you.
Can't wait till I figure out what's wrond with my car so I can truly show him what's up!!

Re: Tangle with a Z06

Thats great Mike, I'm glad that guy knew what you had and showed some respect. It seems like everyone around where I live knows what I have , and won't even try anything. :D I rarely get to drive my trucks, but now that its nice out, I think I need to go hunt some stuff down. Every once and awhile, I'll do a 5-7lb launch just to see how far back the rest of the cars are when I hit 60-70. And one of the best things about driving my truck is how the built trans feels as it shifts, especially the 3-4 shift just driving normally (20% throttle or so).... you actually feel the shift engage is very solid and when its supposed to, you know it was worth every penny :D
I love doing the lauches , but the majority of driving in my truck is just cruising along on a nice day, so having the feel of a strong shift is fun just in itself.

Re: Tangle with a Z06

If you're stock, he'll start walking once he hits second and the gap will grow larger the faster you go. At least that was my experience with my well-tuned stock Sy vs. a Z06 three lights in a row. My wheel wells were bellowing smoke at every light from the cooked stock brakes. I upgraded to 13" Baer's shortly thereafter.

Yeah my truck is mostly stock, except I have a built transmission w/3K stall and a Ultimate chip. Everything else is just the "safety" mods. Motor has never been opened up and I still running stock turbo (for now that is ;) ). When I'm cruising on the street, I run the T1 16 psi setting on my Ultimate chip. I don't have alky on my truck so, I run a "stockish" boost level which is plenty for all my skirmishes on the street. Alky + T2 20 psi would have been nice if I could have ran the Z06 from a dig as I KNOW that nets me mid twelves at the track.

Not sure about the mods done to your ty but IMHO, the race will be over after 60 feet or *very* shortly there after. With a good launch you will definately holeshot him however, your lead will evaporate very quickly unless he doesn't know how to drive. Some driver's "panic" in such situations when the other person gets out of the hole quicker than them by mashing the gas even more which equals more wheel spin for them and an increasing lead for you... Anything can happen on the street and stock tys run mid thirteens IN GOOD TUNE. A Z06 is twelve second machine right off the showroom floor. Stock ty vs Z06 vette, I'm putting my $ on the vette.

DITTO on that. Before I got my built trans and 3K stall converter, I *thought* my truck was decently quick. My previous best pass "back in the day" with my original transmission was a 13.7 @ 100. Those are the only changes that I made to my combination since I ran those numbers back in early 2000 outside of installing a lock up switch and running a little more boost. Dropped over a second and and picked up 6 MPH in my ET's at the track as a result. There is NO comparison the how my truck was before and after I got a transmission done the "right" way...
