T56 Adapter Plate

Okay, I searched and searched, and I cannot find anything that I need. As far as I have seen, every one of you has an automatic tranny!! Well, my goal is to find an adapter that you can hook a T56 6-speed tranny with an AWD Transfer case. Anyone ever heard of this or know a place that might make one? I would love you guy's input!

MAN.. you are going to get a hazing over this one.

If they don't have one... they can make one for you.. just depends how deep your pockets are. This is going to be a tough one though... see if you can find a 2WD tranny that has removable tail shaft housing... the T56 may, I don't know.

And if I were you and were really going to do this.. I would use a ZF tranny from a Corvette instead of a T56... but maybe you already have one. I think the truck would be fun with a 6 speed in it for around town..

Everyone here is going to hammer you for the fact that it will be hard on driveline parts for dragracing... if you want to do it, by all means.. I think it would be interesting.

Actually, I hate coming on to you guys' board and stirring up anything. That wasn't my intent. What I meant was that I knew I was going to have difficulty finding anything on this. I literally spent hours and hours searching your guys' threads to find anything on the subject. I found nothing! I did find that I like the board, there seem to be a lot of knowledgeable guys around here, I hate the boards where there are one or two "know-it-all" guys that answer every question. I also know some of you from "S-SeriesForum" which is my normal home.

Like I said, I meant not to stir the pot, but only to pick everyone's brain on the Adapter subject. Get you guys thinking on your toes, you know?!

This comes up time to time. I personaly never heard anyobdy who went on this route. A few people played with the though then gave up. Mainly because the cost envolved and because a few grands away you will have a slower truck. Bye-bye power starts...

I heard a rumor that v-ice's ty had a t56 installed, but I really dont know.

think different propshaft/driveshaft and the adaptors to make everything mate up. That is if it will fit in the tranny tunnel.


Then forget the ease of boost-launches (if you dont boost launch, your not using your truck-buy something more relyable and 2wd.)

torque multiplication, optimal rpm shifting, no missed shifts, and that wonderful stall converter. I dont particularly like driving automatic cars... but hell if I'd spend any amount of money to swap the sy to a manual.

I've heard of NO adapters to make this work, and I've done a lot of research on adapters. The most difficult would be the transfercase to the transmission.

Then you'd need a 2 step to leave the line with any boost (if that was important to you)

then you will be shifting like mad, since the stock Syty motors start dropping off power (or start tossing rods) past 4500 rpm. Far cry from an LS1's 6100 rev limit (or a slightly modded one spinning to 6400).

Ahh, power start meaning power braking it! Yeah, I understand! But, I don't really go up to the track all that often. (Or at all). So then it really makes no difference. I have raced on the street a couple times, lost to a Z06 Vette by a length, just didn't have the power. Other than that, traction hasn't really been a problem. I try not to abuse the stuff I have by dropping it from 3500, but maybe I would try it just once if I had AWD.

Really, the swap is about originality and also about me. I want AWD. For no other reason than it is nice to have. When you can spin your back tires in 5th gear at 75 mph, you kind of start to think differently. Yes, that was in the rain, and another thing is that I cannot drive my truck in the rain. I will spin with even moderate driving. Hell, I got beat by a POS Civic in the rain. Now that is embarassing!

not true. he had the white/white one with the NSX wing or something on the back, it was for sale a couple of years ago, 700r4...


plus we all know Iceman's 5.0 was an auto too

I'd LOVE to drive a manual SyTy. I wouldn't want it on my own - however I'd love to see it. Autocrossing it would be quite fun also.

I have a 1985 S10 with a LT1/T56 in it. It gets no traction in the rain, which is what prompted me to look into the swap. What I want to do is get a 1991-1993 4x4 X-Cab frame to swap a bunch of my junk over to. Then put AWD in too!

NO, I don't want to ruin any Sy or Ty, I want an AWD S10.

hector, i think it'd be cool.
i have a t56 in my small block s10 as well.
only, i got no traction in the dry - in the wet, the truck is literally terrifying and near impossible to drive in traffic.
i think it likely could be made to work - the t56 tshaft is removable - but i also think its just not practical unless you got $ to burn.
if you're serious, i'd begin by looking at the 5speed oem installs on 4.3 late 4wd s10's. i think they use a new process box.
a good machinist can build your adapter.
mike knell's book on s10 v8 swaps may help you too - lotta killer info and specs in there.

Yeah, my buddy has a 4x4 we are going to work on pretty soon. We are messing with the tranny, I am going to study everything then. Maybe we can figure out something at that point. We shall see! Are you guys totally sure that no one has done this?

Unless you have a HUGE motor, with slicks on the back, you can probably go faster with a manual transmission. Why do you think most tests are done with manual tranny's. Check your Car & Driver mags. Granted, these are almost all stock vehicles, but it just goes to show that stock vs. stock, the manual is faster. A completely equal test except for the tranny. Manual is faster. What to do?

What about that is wrong? Equal vehicles except for the transmission. In each instance the manual is 1 or 2 tenths faster zero to sixty times. That is quicker, no?

But I did say, that with huge motors, such as big blocks pushing 500 hp, one might be better off with an auto.

I am seriously not trying to start a war or argument, but I will argue for my case. It just so happens I am on a board where everyone has an auto. Again, my intent here is to pick your brains about adapters, not about manual vs. auto. Maybe you should bite your lip instead of saying, "I would do that if I wanted to go slower."

BTW, thanks for the constructive replies. I would love to stick around the board and pick at your brains once this happens. As for now, I need to find the adapter.
