Re: Starter recommendations

They don't have that exact number. They have some that contain 6449 in the part number. I like this one REMY 96206

Just go to Vato Zone and tell them you need a starter for a 1996 Silverado 3500 4x4 with a 454.

Also upgrade the purple wire with some 10 gauge.

Re: Starter recommendations

They are a lot more money there. If I was going to spend what they are asking I would get one from hoodtuned first. Advance wants $121.00 with exchange for a rebuild. Hood wants $139 for a PSL100 Hitachi Mini Torque Starter. Rockauto starts at $61-$176 for new ones.

I don't even know why I still post here.

Let me dumb this down for you. That $121 Advance/Vato Zone starter has a LIFETIME warranty.

Think aboutt that.

So does the Rockauto one. and I don't have to mess witha core. The low end $60 doesn't but the $80 one I was looking at did.

Re: Starter recommendations

Yes, I have tried to research this before I asked otherwise I would be hung on this forum for asking a question otherwise . I was looking for thoughts and conformation of part numbers. I have not seen a difference listed anywhere for a 4x4 option on the sites I have looked and the part numbers have not been exactly the same . I started out reading one of your past posts and that is what got me here.

Re: Starter recommendations

I get a kick out of this every time people say it has to be a 454 3500 truck. These starters came in the 96-98 1500-3500 trucks with the 5.0-7.4 engine. The common number for it is a 6449. There may be extra letters tacked on to the number but that all depends on brand etc. Any good interchange will convert the 6449 # to the brand the company has in stock.

I sold these starters to the community for quite a while as a was able to get a great deal on them through my dad's work and I decided to pass it along to the community. These are the best low buck starter to use, when you want to step up get a denso based starter as those are bulletproof. I wish I could say the same about the hitachi, my dads work used to see those come in all the time.

Good luck with the search :D

Re: Starter recommendations

Following David's (Syclone#892) Post #13, Can you explain a little more detail on 'Denso' starters?
I haven't done any research myself on starter, other than what I've read here in previous forum comments.
Is 'Denso' a brand associated with OEM factory GM, similar to the brand of AC Delco or is 'Denso' all on its own? Sorry to sound a little stupid asking this...

Re: Starter recommendations

Sorry I just reread my post and wanted to clarify a couple things.

The 6449 starter is the same between a 305-454 there is no difference internally they are all just a factory gm gear reduction starter. It seems a lot of people think you need the 454 one when in reality its the same starter used to start a 305. And the pickups had the gear reduction starter and a normal heavy starter, so when you are buying one make sure its actually smaller than the starter you are taking out :rotf:

Here is a link to the gm gear reduction starter for reference

To answer the question about the denso here is a pic of a denso starter

Denso is short for nippondenso which is an OE manufacturer of starters. The best part is the starters are extremely reliable and the part that usually wears out is the contacts which is something a regular guy could change if necessary. Check out youtube I'm sure there are videos of guys replacing the contacts. I have those starters in medium duty diesels with over 300k on them.

The powermaster above is an oe starter with an adapter plate to bolt to a different engine such as a gm 4.3
I am not a fan of powermaster but I knew I could find a quick link for one, there are others out there that make the same starter if you look around.
So in short, denso is the manufacturer of the design, powermaster and others are the ones that build and sell them :D

Hope that clears up a couple misconceptions!

Quite a thread just for a starter.:rotf:

But I have a question RE the listed starters. The first (Chev mini racing) brings up a starter that has the motor and gear on the same center-line. Where is the gear reduction?

And on the second, IMHO, using adapters for a starter is asking for trouble.

Regardless, starters are usually quite reliable. My original is still there. On our trucks keeping the bat cable and the "purple wire" properly shielded is the key, not which starter you use.

Re: Starter recommendations

i tried the BBC starter. 6 of them actually. They were all reman. and could never get them to mesh right. They never fit right, and required a ton of shims, and would get hungup in the flexplate.

I switched to a powermaster mini hi-torque, and its worked flawless for the past couple years. :2cents:

Re: Starter recommendations

Thanks Dave. Interesting on the planetary gear set. Makes me want to take it apart and see how they get it all in there. I have one of those rebuilder guys near me. Starters are usually a get-what-you-pay-for item. And yes the Bendix thing is just one of my wonky pet peves. Comes with age. :rotf: Thanks.

Re: Starter recommendations

Here is the best I can come up with at the time for the gear reduction part

From what I remember my dad said the gears are pretty small in the gm ones, they do blow up from time to time.
I would highly recommend buying a good starter/alternator from a rebuild shop vs autozone etc as you will get a better quality piece.

One thing that has been mentioned before about the gm starters, do not do the old school remote solenoid and use a piece of copper strap across the original starter solenoid posts. I can't remember exactly why, voltage issue I think, but the starter will not work properly and will cause engagement issues.

Out of all the ones I sold I had one guy say he had an issue and I didn't know what was going but I gave it to my supplier, they checked it out and said it was fine. I sold it to another member at a discount and he had no issues. My assumption is there was a copper strap installed on it.

As Dave P. has mentioned before, no reason to run those extra solenoids etc, just use a relay to actuate the original starter solenoid. Thats how all the oe's do it these days!
