Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

My friend showed me the little button that sprays cold water onto his intercooler in his STi. Does this really help? Would it be beneficial to do in a SY? I'd love to have a little bottle of ice water and spray it on to bring down temps. Anyone thought of this or tried it?

If we're going to do it, why not use dry ice and plumb it down there. :dunno:

I dont see it being any help but who knows, you might gain a 1000th.

It's been discussed before.. I believe it was basically settled that it wasn't worth the money for our trucks.. you'd get more out of an alky kit or welding up a plate on top of your upper ic to put dry ice on etc..

Just have someone stand in front of it before a run with a garden sprayer full of ice water with the intercooler pump running and have them spray it down until it's ice cold. I don't think your allowed having anything on the truck that sprays or leaks water when you go down a track anyway.

So do you think it actually helps on the STi? Seems to me like it wouldn't do much, but it is kinda cool.

I wouldn't think it would do much in terms of drag racing... maybe if you can use it as your already moving I guess?

On the SRT-4's, the stage 2 kit when ordered with "toys" comes with an intercooler sprayer. I'm thinking it would be more benefitial on air/air IC's than ours.

If you were to hit the button right off the line on a 1/4....You would'nt see, hear, feel, know the effects of it untill you've went through the traps. It just take too long to take effect

it helps on the sti bc they are A/A, and it helps kill off the heat soat that occurs from them being mounted on top of the engine.

it's a good idea for a/a units but will take a lot of water to cool off a w/a system.

like mentioned it does help, but if you are going through the trouble just install the alky kit at the TB for the most dramatic effect.

What if you have alky and a-a? would it do any good then?
We opened up a nitrous bottle on the a-w intercooler on my sy right before i pulled out of the staging lanes - expensive pass but dropped a tenth. Frost was built up on the intercooler :D

NOS makes an intercooler spray bar kit that was just tested against CryO2's and NX's by DRIFT magazine on a SRT4 and it won by more than 5hp, boostin the base 226hp to 245hp at the wheels. Im already running a Julio Don's progressive system and have a NOS spray system im goin to install as soon as i get my trans in the truck. Someone told me it would freeze the water in the lower IC and obstruct flow but im goin to use antifreeze/water 50/50 so i don't think it will be an issue. I live at a very fair weathered place and hi temps are never a worry but i've seen my truck's response at 4am in january and wanna have that kind of performance at the push of a button all year round altho i'm going to be spraying Co2 instead of nitrous to keep the fun at a resonable price.

By the way, if anyone is interested in one of these systems i can sell them at Jobber pricing. If interested PM me or send me an e mail rather.

Ps. here is a link to Drift's articule: http://www.holley.com/data/Ads/NOSCoverArticle.pdf

Re: Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

I fabbed up a system on my supra. It had headlight squirters that i shaved and routed the lines down to the intercooler to spray it. The final verdict: More of a "hey look at the cool thing my car can do" effect than anything. At the track it makes no difference. The supra has an A/A intercooler unlike the typhoon, but in my opinion I think it's more of a gimmick than anything...I make fun of my friends SRT4 because he has that stage 2 kit or whatever, and I still whoop him with my Taurus SHO lol...then again he doesn't have a clue how to drive stick...anyways. A waste of time to convert a typhoon to the squirter setup IMO, especially since it's not an A/A intercooler setup...even if it was i'd probably advise against it anyways.

Re: Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

the benefits of the a/a is your manifold will constantly be cool, as long as air is passing through it. Then once you go into boost, the alky will do all that is needed.

It's alot more difficult for alky, co2, etc to cool an intake from say 140-160 deg down to ambient especially if its only activated with boost, and temps are already climbing. Atleast with a decent a/a you are starting with a good baseline for manifold temperature.,

IMHO, it is pointless to spray nitrous or co2, etc on a stock intercooler system.

Then how do I get my rear washer to stop leaking when doing boost launches???

Re: Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

I still see big diferences in performance from late at night to the middle of the day in winter on my stock IC, even with alki injection. So, yeah im goin to give it a try since i got the spray bar for free and i have a NOS Cheater sistem just siting around and a few lil powershot selenoids. Once i do it i'll record a series of different runs to compare and post'em here, as for now i can't say it does or doesnt work cause i havent done it yet.

Re: Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

IMO, if your spraying nitrious for the cooling effect, why not spray it into the intake stream? I'm personally not a fan of either, but it makes more sense (to me, at least) that if you're gonna spray it, might as well spray it where it will be used to cool the intake charge AND give more power :2cents:

Re: Spraying intercooler? Like Subaru STi

My engine is completly stock and wouldnt stand the sudden hit of say 40hp, besides when injecting 40hp of nitrous on boosted aplications it turns out to produce 80hp due to the dramatical intercoolin properties of nitrous, therefore so many blown up engines and the reluctancy to use nitrous on boosted aplications. I rather have the advantage of air density with no sudden transitions in power compared to the immediate power hit that nitrous provides, at least on the stock internals. Also im goin to use Co2 not nitrous to cool it up and cut costs in half.
