Sounds like an owl under my hood, sometimes...

As the title says...and its darn annoying. Start a few weeks ago when I was sitting in traffic at a stop light I started to notice what sounded like an owl whooting. The thing is, is that if I turn off the truck and restart it the noise will go away but sometimes comes back (as I noticed today when I was letting my truck warm up in idle, it started maybe 10 mins. into it).

Anyone have any ideas?

I've wonder if it could be this but I don't really know of a way to test it I guess.

Expensive or not? Easy to change or not?

it sounds like its comes from the front of the block.

I listed the upper Dist bushing because I just went thru this problem on our 2001 GMC Safari and post about it here. It did sound like a bearing too, so I check every pulley and the Alt, Power Steering too, I did have 1 bearing that was showing sign of wear so I replace it.

But I still had the noise from time to time while the engine was heating up and then it got to where the noise was all the time. When I took the dog house off and started the engine I could see the dist cap had a shaking in it. When I remove the cap the dist shaft had alot of play in it on the top end. So I remove the dist and check the bottom, there was no play at all. The play at the top measure 0.155, It turns out that the upper bushing does not get lube from the engine oil and our dist lasted 170,000 miles before the bushing failed.

I don't know, but check all of your bearings 1st. that is really easy to do. Here is the link.

X3. Part number for it is #18022219. It can be had from the "stealership" for about $6 or $7. It sounds more like a duck than an owl to most folks.

It comes and goes consistantly, for lack of a better word. Almost sounds like it's coming from the front of the intake, IAC maybe? Still learning about my engine, let alone the Vortec engine.
