smoke in valve covers.

I am getting smoke in valve covers. A small amount of smoke is in both valve covers. I removed both breathers. I have no pcv system right now and I see a small abount of smoke billowing out of both covers. I put a piece of paper over the holes to see if there is air pressure. Even at 200rpm the paper juts vibrated about 1/8th of inch. I had more air leaving before the new heads but I dont remember ever seeing the smoke. I did the top end build but left the bottem end stock because the compression test before the build was good. 140-146 on all 6. I figured that was good. When I removed the pan I saw no metal. All the pistions were cleaned and everything look fine. I was actualy surprised to see how clean thing was in fact. The oil now is still clean after about 50 miles. Truck runs good and strong. idle is good but not great. Good for a Sy. 750-800rpm. I havea oil leak out the rear but It looks to be the oil sender where it meets the block (thin tube).
Is the smoke normal?? Heads were bought built from a member on here. Could itbe the valves are adjusted wrong. Truck runs good on 18psi with minimal knock (1-3*) on 91 octane and no alky. Boost launched @ 10lbs with no knock. Got a few deg. on shifts but would taper off. Engine idles @ 14.7. WOT it runs around 11.3. Again with no alky. I am new to engines. Not sure whats wrong. I need Help. I searched and found it could be the rings. I do get a bit of oil on valve covers but they are non baffled rpm covers.
I will do a compression test. And a leakdown test if I can find the equiptment to do so. ANd if someone can tell me how. You guys always seem to help. I Try to do my part to pay you all back by giving away parts and help with what I know. Thank you in advance, Gary

Re: smoke in valve covers.

I have 2 breathers on it now. Now pcv system. Hole on Tb that was going to PCv is capped. I get a small amount of oil on paper when I rev up the engine. I feel no air. The smoke does not blow out. Just biillows out slowly and fills the entire valve cover.
Will a compression test tell me anything??? Could the valves be adjusted wrong?? Anyone.

Gary,

I just re-read your post. Like George said, fix the PVC sys, as in hook it back up. A normally operating PVC system has virtually no effect on performance.

Re: smoke in valve covers.

with it on or off I get the same thing. With the breathers on I cant see the smoke. I feel no air out the covers at all. I do see oil comming out the breathers but my covers have no baffles. With the pcv setup on I see oil on the PCv valve that opens during boost. (one clostest to front of engine) Rear one is clean. Both valves are new. Is there a diagram how it hooks up to make sure I have it right.

Re: smoke in valve covers.

Not that it makes any difference since they both come off that "T" the front one went originally to the turbo cross-over and the rear one went to the TB. So under boost the turbo sucked on the front one and under vacuum the TB sucked on the rear. It's my understanding they both have the same part #. Unless you can figure out how to plumb the front one to the turbo intake between the turbo and the filter then you have no PVC under boost. Either way filtered air enters the drivers valve cover goes through the engine and exits through the PVC valves into the engine where it's consumed. Less polution that way ya know...

Re: smoke in valve covers.

Gary I removed the PVC system on my truck and ran AN hose from the valve covers to a catch can with breather. I smokes when engine is up to temperature. This is normal.
