Reviving and old discussion here.. Has anyone made any progress finding a part # or place to buy the supposed rolled fillet crank thats supposed to be in the new Vortec 4300 marine engine?

Ive chased every lead or possible source Ive came across and came up with a big fat goose egg (thats zero/nothing for you city folk :D ) unless I wanna buy the complete engine  .

That is pretty much the same response I got from my dad. The boat dealer he works for can order the engine - not the crank.

I did hear this weekend about a "good" price on a billet crank. $2300!!! Yikes.

Sigh..... the effort is appreciated Dave. Whats most aggravating to me is the fact a person could prolly get just the crank if the magic part # was known but trying to get a dealer to put forth some effort in finding it is like beating your head against the wall. It only feels good to stop.

The marinas round here really dont cater to the DIYer so their parts dept ppl know even less than the car dealer parts guys. Want a $2k fish finder? They know all about that.. Need a crank or just a part #? They get that deer in the headlights look.

I have a feeling it would have to come from someone more inside than a dealership. Anyone know anyone who works for Mercury?

My dad works for Sea Ray..

Oh.. and I know the guy who is/was the liason between GM Powertrain and Mercury... Bill Reiman (Name dropping... if he can help) :)

I will contact them both and see if they can help us.

I know they can get the whole engines of course. I am not sure about the cranks.

I will ask for a P/N for a new model 4300 Vortec Crank correct? That is what you are looking for?

My dad knows one of those guys from Mercury and they got me a complete harness and a new MEFI4 controller from one of the engines... I was going to program the computer, long story or use the harness to make one for the Speed Pro (bought the PTE one)

From my dad:

"I sent it to a contact at Merc. I dealt with him on the jets and other
things. He may be able to find it out, unless is private info."

I will let you know when I get more info.

Nick,

If you could come up with a part # for this mystery crank youd be like Indiana Jones. Itd be the holely grail to ppl on a mere mortals budget like myself.

Best of luck, thanks for the effort, and let us know what you find.

My uncle is a retired GM powertrain engineer that still has contacts at GM.
I asked him if he could help. He said he would get back to me as soon as he finds something. I went out to GM web site under marine engines.
They are using MPFI on the new marine 4.3? Maybe we can use this lower intake with the Vortec heads?
click on the Vortec 4300

Yea we talked about this intake before. It's still a cast iron base, even though the upper is aluminum.

I'm sure it could be made to work in a turbo environment, but how well?

Hmmm... I got these from the Merc parts book...

Crank - Pre '98 - 429-95171 (the 'old' crank)

Crank - '99 and later - 429-804911

These are the only two crank part #s that I could find.
The '99 PN is still valid in 2002/2003. The '99 crank goes about
$750...

Later,

Dig

Hey you might want to try Norm at Ultratech, they do marine stuff and Norm has a lot of experience with the old V6  phone: (219) 256 - 9462. Good luck...Ryan

pretty nifty little motor they have there. 223 hp? is that the highest production hp the N/A 4.3 has ever had? pretty sweet they are getting the LS1 rocker setup, nodular caps, sweet crank, and 1 bitching set of brass freeze plugs. :fist:

I do notice that they have eliminated many of the freeze plugs that are in our blocks. but then again they started that 7 years ago...

what I do want to know is what is a 2V inlet manifold?
and what is it mean when they say est and hei dist and "COILS" are available in this form. it says coils plural. so does this mean the 4.3 finally gets DIS?

2 barrel carb manifold as far as I know.. For some reason boats rarely get fuel injection and are stuck with carbs. My only guess for that reasoning is that if the engine craps out in the middle of a lake or out at sea your average captain has a better chance of monkeying with a carb to get it started and make it safely to shore. Most ppl cant handle even basic FI repairs or trouble shooting so they just use the KISS principal (Keep It Simple Stupid!!). Carb stuff is just about stone reliable too even if it is OLD school.

Then again the only thing I know about boats is that they are ok if the water is on the outside but not ok if its on the inside. :-?

dig,

Oh yeah.. I almost forgot.. Thanks for the part #s. I'll poke around and see if I can get some details on the part #.

Well,

Marine motors are going to FI - actually it is becoming quite common. The shop my dad is working for just bought a laptop for monitoring the ECM or ECU or PCM - or whatever they are calling it

I am getting closer to a part number though - and maybe some pics :)

Some of the buick guys use the 4.1L block, instead of the 3.8, because of the rolled fillet crank.
Here is some info on the subject from the buick site.

FYI... The turbo 3.8 and NA 4.1 use the same rolled fillet crank. Snagging a 4.1 outta the bone yard is a cheap way to do two things. 1.) Score a cheap strong crank. 2.) Gain displacement from the 4.1s bigger bore.

Bone yards practically give them away cause they dont know about the crank it contains or the CID bump that the buicks guys are after. The down side is that if the 4.1 has ever been rebuilt/replaced before its snagged by an enthusioust getting the rolled fillet crank is a crap shoot (non rolled fillet NA 3.8 cranks interchange).

Yeah, your right. 3.8L turbo crank=4.1L N/A crank

Thats just not fair. :-? They can go get a crank outta the junkyard for ~$100, and we have to scrounge the earth, looking through marine engines for one that will probably cost close to 10 times that.

It does seem the 4.1L pistons have to be custom made though, that can't be cheap.

got it

got it

ok ive got a guy that runs a boat shop , and he said he
can get the crank all day long for 1500.00 . Thats his price
so if anyone wants one tell me and I will order it . Maybe if
we order more at once maybe we can get a better price. But 1500.00
for forged crank is not that bad.
