Relocating Knock Sensor

To those who have done it, what does take and where should it go? How do I come up with the wiring to increase it's length and what is the best way to get done there to sauder wires if needed?

any advice would help.

Weld a 3/8 - 16 x 1 bolt to a 3/8" npt cap. I think the knock sensor threads are 3/8 npt. You could take the knock sensor to the hardware store to make sure. Screw that bolt into the hole next to the thermostat housing. Buy a new knock sensor wire pigtail and run a new wire to the ecm through the firewall. That will be easier than splicing back behind the engine. It's also easier to start with a new knock sensor, instead of struggling with the old one.

Good luck.

Re: Relocating Knock Sensor

Hey Jim, as always thanks. One question... I assume I can just leave my old one in its place, disconnected from the ECM of course, where the new one will be plug in?

always wondered what that hole was for...i forgot if it was for the old stock hard IC hard line brackets.

thanks again!

I meant start the project, not start the engine. You don't have to fiddle with removing the old one that way. It made sense to me. lol

You can just leave the old one in place, and it will be ready if you ever want to switch back.

make a switch between the wire coming from the ECM, so you can switch between the stock setup and the relocated KS, you might pick up more nose in front of the engine..

Re: Relocating Knock Sensor

I like Jim's idea with the bolt and cap....I still think the drain plugs on the sides of the block (like the LT1) would be the best place to listen for knock in the cylinders.....I have my front clip off now, I need to remember to check for the possibility tonight.....

Re: Relocating Knock Sensor

stupid question here, but why would you relocate the knock sensor? is the stock location a poor spot for it?

Re: Relocating Knock Sensor

i'm thinking i'm picking up alittle false knock from my rockers is it wise to move to the front to eliminate the sensitivity from the stock location ? And if so, will i have luck with picking up true knock signals from detination ?

to make a long, and common, story short...becaues you have spent 5 years trying to track down what is creating, what appears to be, false knock. It is somewhat of a last resort, but after you have tried eveything under the sun, including changing cylinder conditions through higher octance, lower boost, and added meth...it is time. that is only small list of the many things I have done.

I don't want to talk about it, i'm getting pissed just thinking about it.

thanks for the simple and brief explanation

I am going to do this when I pull my motor. I wonder if you can pickup more noise from the trans or accessoies.

my relocated KS is picking up more noise in front of the engine..
