Update on this end. After trying a few new modules and pickups with the MSD, adjusting the air gap, checking the rotor phasing, chasing wires and grounds, and a host of other troubleshooting, the removal of the MSD and installation of a reman AC Delco dizzy has all the random rpms during cracking gone!
Lost a bit of confidence in MSD proofing out the design of this distributor's internals, and more so not doing anything about it when it showed up quite a few times on their forum a few years back. But that is in the past now and the engine is starting proper so I am happy!
After doing research, I found a good tip (from a reputable source), a test to do with an AC Delco dizzy, that helps confirm it’s a good rebuilt or reman unit (not a full electronics test though), and that is to slowly spin the gear by hand, feeling for free, even movement, as well the slight catch as the reluctor passes the pickup each time. The reman AC Delco passed this test, but the Cardone one I also bought did not, it spun half way freely but with little feel of the reluctor, and dragged on the last half of a turn (bearing not pressed true, whatever).
So, hot and cold startup is now instant with the engine, no more than a second or two and the engine lights off, far better than the 5 or more seconds it took before. And though I did not have the injector flood-out condition some did with wild erroneous rpms, mine still suffered within the ECM trying to achieve spark and fuel injection at the proper time with the rpms being all over the place!
I also noted the AC Delco unit had an update, that there is now an aluminum plate/shield that is placed over the module, attached with the same screws the module is attached to the distributor body with. Seems it was found beneficial as I know they don’t add parts if not needed!
