Dowel Pins - essential or not?

Lifters - who is running the 875s WITHOUT excessive noise and possible false knock? What rockers are you using?

Cometics - ok to use afer they have been torqued down? Built the engine today (tried to) and found damaged stock lifters and didn't even notice the dowel pins until after it was assembled.

It's my first time building an engine that I didn't even get to disassemble so cut me some slack :D

You might try sending Syclone0209 a PM.... I watched him put his Vortecs on about a month ago, with ARP's, etc..... I don't remember seeing dowel pins. I would not pull it apart until you hear from someone.... '0209 may be able to answer your lifter question as well.

Kind of quiet on the board today - don't know where everyone is - maybe a ball game or something going on, on TV.

Re: rebuild questions

are you talking about the head dowl pins? i don't see them being required. they just help locate the head and gasket until you bolt it down. i wouln't reuse any head gaskets if i had a choice regardless, i mean if you spent all the money and time replacing theheads why skimp on gaskets? and i'd scrap the stock head bolts, they are a torque to yield design. get some arp bolts or studs, just remember w/ studs th heads can be interesting to r&r in the truck. as far as the lifter i put those in my truck but haven't fired it up yet. i still got a couple stock sets around just in case. but i don't think stock replacements are that expensive to buy.

Re: rebuild questions

Awesome!

I used ARP studs as I was told (WindedV6) that they held the COMETICS better. I hear people have had coolant leaks with bolts. I went with COMETICS as they seem the best - believe me, I am not skimping on the build here! :($$$$$

Thanks for the replies guys - it seems I may be ok with the assembly thus far.....

Anyone else out there today?

Thanks again!

Location of the head relative to the cylinders is pretty difficult without them...
Particularly, how close your valves are to the cylinder walls.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who decided to build one of these my first time. I was beginning to think I was insane.......but atleast I'm not alone!

I would have thought that the 13 studs in the head provided correct siting of the heads. There can't be that much play in there, can there? :(

Hmm..... So can I just take the heads off and put the dowels in, then re-use the gaskets? Will the Cometics will be ok?

First time's a charm :D

Um, no. You've got some awfully odd studs if they're tight in the head bolt holes.

And, there's nothing guaranteeing that the position that the head bolts arrived at is centered with the bore. They make offset dowel pins to align heads to the deck properly, when there's enough core shift in the block.

Not putting the dowels in is a regret waiting to happen.

Everything you say makes sense. The machine shop said that it would be ok though. Guess I will have to pick up some dowel pins tomorrow when I go past and fit them next week.

So the Cometics will be ok then to re-use? Shit - I hate this guesswork.

Like you say, it is potentially a regret waiting to happen. I can't believe thought that I am the first person to run into this here - Syclone0290 has yet to gat back to me so I am not sure he did forget them.

I searched syty.net and found nothing. Wonder how many other people didn't fit them.

So if they are that tight a fit do you need to hammer the heads onto them; is it an interference fit?

Has anyone got any pics of them?

Thanks Dig.

Crap shoot there... you'll know as soon as you get them off.
Stockers peel all apart.

The heads drop onto them... they're tapered at the top. You do pound them into the block.

This is kind of an 'order of build' thing... after you get all of your machine work done one of the first things to do is set the heads on a bare block with the dowels, then flip it over to check the bore centricity.

I've got a set of (oily) Fel-Pro gaskets that I use for mock-up... you can check intake manifold to port alignment at this time, and adjust if necessary. If you have a big-lift cam, and larger valves, you'd put the crank in too, so you can set up a piston without rings + a rod, and rough-check valve to piston clearance.

Everyone's instinct, when you get the block back and all your parts are in, is to start stuffing the block, first thing. If you have a known build, and repeatable templates for the intake/heads, you can do things this way. (particularly if you're building lots of motors)
I wouldn't recommend this way for someone new to building, though. You need to check, check, and check again. And, you'll probably eat a few gaskets and/or screw up some
parts while going through it.

If you take the time to dot all the i's and cross all the t's, you'll have a much more reliable motor, and much more peace of mind. When you think of all the $$ you spend on a build, not doing *everything* right just because you were in a hurry to get it together, or didn't want to wait for a set of gaskets seems like kind of a tragedy.

Re: rebuild questions

How will I know they are good to go again?

Guess I'll be taking the heads off and putting these pins in then. Dammit.

You're absolutely right - I don't want to worry about it so they will have to go in. I was hoping that the 13 studs already in there would align it as necessary but I guess not.
