You can move the wheel in and out about 1/4"? Thats not alarmingly abnormal and the axle is held in via a "C" clip on the inside of the rear diff. You must pull the rear diff cover off to access these clips as well as the pin and bolt that retain them.

Re: rear axle/drive shaft

A 1/4 inch of end play at the axle is a lot. There must be something broke or seriously worn out to allow that much end play. Are you sure that it is that much? Your rear end is the 7.5 10 bolt with the Eaton Governor Lock differential, which has clutches behind both axle gears. There is a cam behind the left axle gear, which applies pressure to that clutch pack. There is a spring that separates the clutches on that side durring normal driving. If the cam is damaged or the clutches are seriously worn it will cause excess end play in the axles. If the end play is too much it can allow the c clip to fall out and the axle will come out. I have not seen any axle with 1/4 inch end play.
