Radiator / Engine flush

Im way past overdue to do a radiator / engine flush and change out the thermo on my truck. Figured Id throw it out and ask what the recommendation is for a good radiator/engine flush product or at least which brand is best to buy off the shelf?

I've used Wynns radiator flush and found it loosened quite a lot of crud the garden hose didn't touch. But I'm sure there are others that will perform as well. Until recently, I didnt think it would make a difference, but it did. This was on an Audi though and not a SyTy. The heater stopped working and at first I thought it was a heater valve somewhere that was frozen. I left it a while, until I got around to it, only to find it didn't have a valve, only air diverter flaps. Same principles apply though. Next time I do a flush, I will be using the same product again, just means doing a double flush. I never stop learning in this game.

Re: Radiator / Engine flush

ive always used BG radiator flush- we used it in the gmc dealer I worked for. throw it in to the radiator not the overflow- drive it until its hot- put a few miles on it- let it cool and flush it out and refill. ive always had a inline flush machine but the fittings that you can install on a heater hose and hook a hose to work just fine

its awesome using the flush machine since the tanks are clear you can see the old stuff verse the new stuff while its working

We use cascade in our big trucks when we flush them.

Same here. Add it, run it and drain it.

The cooling system in my ty was badly neglected. Water in the cooling system looked like liquid rust. I drained the system and the block a few times. I even ran the engine with the water hose in the radiator and the plugs pulled out of the block drains. Block drains were plugged up as well. Turbo wasn't getting any water circulation in who knows how long. Had to clear the block drains before it would drain and had to do it a few times because the would plug up with all the sediment in the lower block. It took a few times of running the engine with the water hose in the radiator and water draining out of the block. Water in the radiator is nice and green as it should be.

Never heard the cascade trick. Cool, I'll give it a shot!

It works well enough to clean a cooling system of engine oil due to an engine oil cooler failure. I still recommend pulling the plugs from the block and completely draining it. I forgot to mention I removed the thermostat when I ran my engine with the block draining and the water in the radiator.

Passenger side block drain is a pain to get to but the driver side is much easier. Have fun.

unless the block & rad are corroded- (you are using distilled water right?)
reg water is fine from the hose- you gonna drain it out anyway.

hose under pressure would be great- kits are 5.99 at auto zone.

1)turn on water connect to rad cap,(kit connects to heater hose)
2)put heater on high,
3)open rad drain valve let run for 20 min.(monitor water level and temp.
good to go.
refill with distilled water and a/f mix.

also works great for the inter-cooler system AND getting out All-the air pockets!

Re: Radiator / Engine flush

Where are you guys able to drain coolant out and flush the system for 20minutes?

I would drain and collect as much antifreeze out of the radiator and block first. Then I would flush the engine out with water. I just let the water run out on the driveway. Funny thing tho, all the stray cats quit coming around. :dunno:

most driveways, garages and streets have drains even in tree hugger neighborhoods
