Propane, BBQ with your sy or ty

If any of you guys hang out on the buick board you may notice a raging debate on Alcohol Vs Propane. Looks like there will be a propane kit out soon. (a really nice one that is) and the guy lives here in Dallas. So far on a buick, testing shows the propane will outlast the gas tank 4 times over. Plus they are running loads of timing with boost into the mid 20's with no or very little knock!! :vamp:

This seems to be a really kick ass add on to your turbo car. I will post a link to the site when they have all the info up.

There will be another available soon that will allow for in car tunning of propane parameters. I think they will start taking orders in a week or so. Also it will have a low fuel warning.

Go do some searches on Turbobuick.com

There's a thread that is many pages long in Tech, and a new thread in Alcohol & nitrous section.

The guys tuning & developing this kit I trust a *LOT* more than the import kit guys (no offense, but Jay Carter is a good tuner and knows his shit).

hahaha, that is funny pittman. they are both tuneable. i have been looking at jay's kit. it is sweet, and thus far is the one i am going with.

IPO's kit is tunable because you can vary the pressure (quantity) and the boost it comes on at.
but Jay's kit is just cool. I want to see pics of the control box, guess it is like SMC'S. :D

From what I read only one was tuneable from inside the truck. You knou like when your driving.

I dunno maybe I missed somethin

Ok, lets clear some things up, after searching the 'net it looks like some people are comparing propane to nitrous oxide. Totally different concepts. Nitrous oxide, and to a small effect alcohol, are oxidizers, (really want something wild, try propylene oxide) they increase the oxygen content ingested by the engine, chemical supercharging if you will. Propane and alcohol are fuels, high octane fuels, meant to quell detonation. Methanol has an octane rating of about 120, pure propane 125 (some propane is actually a mix with other gaseous hydrocarbons such as butane, so the octane may be as low as 105). Alcohols also carry an oxygen molecule, so they are in effect an oxidizer too. All of them, nitrous oxide, propane, and alcohol will have a cooling effect on the intake charge. Nitrous and propane are held under pressure in a liquid state, their change of state from liquid to gas absorbs heat. Alcohol also has this effect, as it readliy vaporizes, for example many circle track guys run methanol, if jetted too rich the engine wont build temperature. We had one car way rich initially, and the intake was cold to the touch. How about Nitro methane, the model r/c engines (2-stroke designs) use a certain percent (sometimes a large percent!) of it. Because nitrogen generally forms unstable molecular bonds, almost all explosives use nitrogen. NHRA dragsters have been known to blow spark plugs out of the head and still run decent, the model r/c engines use a glow plug to get started then run without spark. Why has propane become such a topic recently? The Diesel guys are using it, it works as a catalyst with diesel fuel, makes it burn more efficiently.

it may be proplyene oxide, there was an article in circle track a few years ago about it, discussed increased jetting (more oxygen need more fuel) and power increase. It's often listed in racing division rule books as a banned substance to add to motor fuel. :D

Ive been watching the thread on the Buick board very closely. Just waiting to see how it all works out. Im VERY interested in the results

I havent seen an ans to something Im wondering though.. Is the propane in the small cylinders (used in torches, camping grills, etc) the same stuff as whats in the bigger tanks that Im seeing??? If so will the small tanks work the same as the bigger ones?? Im just not real thrilled about trying to find a place to mount that huge tank in the bed (no drilling holes) and the smaller one would be easier to secure/mount for me. Besides, Im just anal about certain stuff being the way I want it. :D

One more thing.. Will someone PLEASE explain that oxygen, by itself, is NOT flamable so I can print it out and show it to an engineer I work with that Ive been argueing with for the past year or so.. Thanks..

Its the same stuff, but someone said the small torch bottles won't flow enough propane, not sure this is true, just something I read in one of the Internet propane debates.

You can get the 10lb DOT RV type bottle, longer and a little skinnier than the grill bottles. It would go in the bed fine. I just cant spare any room out of my bed though. I use my sy to carry the slicks and the chairs, cooler to the track when we race the buick. Buick has a fuel cell back in the trunk so we cant carry alot there. I saw a Ford power stroke with A LOT of mods and a huge propane tank run a dyno clear of scale at over 1200 ft lbs of torque. Ive heard of the big fords and dodges runing hi 13's and low 14's down at the motorplex. Pretty damn bad for a diesel!

ok, its propylene oxide, when used in motor fuels it acts as an accelerant, causing in incerase in fuel volitility. the fuel should burn more completly, and you should be able to run less ignition advance. For some more info search on the web and check out http://www.turbofast.com.au/racefuel15.html

looks like someone should try and use model R/C fuel in their alcohol injection, it uses a methanol base fuel, with a top end lubricant oil, and a certain (specified) percent nitro methane. Try and get some with a low oil percentage, some are as high as 20% oil content.

very, very interesting

Thx Brad

I fly alot of RC, maybe Ill throw a gallon in there. :drinking:

RC planes, helis, cars

Thats why Im into the Sy's now its a lot cheaper than RC.
