Priming motor (oil not paint), WTF not sure about this???

Ok, i got a primer for my motor and stuck it down in there, i then turned it a little and it locked up (doing this by hand) so i go a screwdriver and turned it a little it freed up and turnd all the way back around to the same spot then locked up again. Now its not locking up to the point that is really hard to turn but, it doen not spin free like the rest of the way when you turn it.

Is this normal, or could something be F'd up. (I do have oil in there, id say 4qrts i need to ad alil more) but i can hear oil moving when i turn it.

are you 100% sure its correctly seated ? I cant imagine why it would be seizing up... U can drop in the distributor (leave wires and cap off) and try turning the motor over by hand and see if the rotor is rotating. I dont know why it would be hanging up unless theres a serious [roscoe p coltraine voice] FLAW IN THE SLAW [/end roscoe p coltraine voice]

If the rotor is spinning smoothly chances are that somewhere along the line something is EFFED UP..... Dont do alot of prying etc with distributor in, you dont wanna grind any teeth off the distributor gear. Turn it over slowly with an extension and a nut and see if everything moves smoothly.

the primer i got does not have the gear on it, it is just the oil pump drive, I put it down (I think all the way) and when i turn it i can actually hear oil moving around down there. but every time around in the same spot is sticks (not really bad but not like i think it should). I will try the distri thing tomarrow.

Man i was hopping to fire it up tomarrow but mabey not :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:

I know the primer doesnt have gear on it, it would be interesting to see the camshaft turn the crank for a change that would most undboutedly result in a :fist: scenario somewhere inside the engine. Its also possible that what you are feeling is an increase in drag because you reach a specific pressure within the engine resulting in more OOOOMPH to turn over the pump.. I dunno really hard to say for sure not being there and all, kinda grasping at straws... What the hell its 11:09 pm on a Saturday nite and I dont have a life so I thought I'd respond. :roll: Try the distribor deal tomorrow and see what ya think.. Its gotta go in anyhow to start the engine.

there is a deffanant hard spot on it, I just played with it again and at the same point it stiffens up (dont think its pressure building up, as it sat for a little while and when i tried to turn it it was still stuck, now if i turn it a little faster with the screwdriver, it goes over with out any problems (cant really feel the hicup but its still there)


I also put a little more oil in it, so i know its got the stuff down there.

did you weld the pickup tube on the pump?

if might be that the pump has a hard spot in it for some reason.

and your goin to have to turn the primer with a drill, not just by hand...

I know i have to use a drill, but shouldt it still be ez to turn or is it normal to hang up just a little.

Like i say its not bad but it doent feel good.

There is a burr or "bad" spot in the moving parts of the pump. You should have spun it in your hand before installation to see if it turned freely. If you didnt check it before installation it needs to be removed and checked. If the pump does not turn freely once you remove it then it needs to be disassembled and the problem fixed or flat out returned for a replacement. Do NOT try to use this pump until its fixed or replaced.

If it did spin freely before you installed it then its possible the oil pump as picked up a piece of trash and it has made its way into the pump gears (it doesnt take much to lock one up turning it by hand). This would also possibly explain why you can rotate it to a certain point but no further then rotate it the other way to the same point. Pump needs to come off and disassembled to find out whats in there and clean it out.

To sum it up you MUST remove the pump and find out what the problem is. Do NOT try to use the pump as is because it could EASILY fail or shear the small roll pin in the distributor that drives it once you fire the motor up. That happening equals ZERO oil pressure which will ruine the bearings in ~30 seconds. IMO ~2hrs to fix the pump is a WHOLE lot better than scrapping the bearings and possibly the crank shaft.

the primer tool i got from i think arp would lock up as it spun!

aparently the heat from the shaft against the aluminum bushing it sat in did not have enough clearance.

I think i took sandpaper or a file and spun the shaft with a drill while laying the file on the end of the shaft that would bind against the bushing.

the bushing was the round part that the distributo hold donw clamp went on.

so to confirm its the tool and not the pump. set the bushing in a vice and spin it with a drill.

I bet it is the tool binding and not the oil pump

I also remeber having to grind down the od of the bushing to get it to seat completely into the intake hole also

WHile your at it put a gauge on one of the ports.

Either the turbo oil output hole on the drivers side if your doing this on a stand.

if in the car use the port on the oil filter adapter for the filter.
