whats the longest you would let your truck sit before you would pull the distributor and prime the oil system ?

Re: priming engine

I wouldnt do it unless its been 6 months. I would just pull fuel pump relay and spark plugs and crank for 30 secs wait and repeat.

I was thinking to hook up an electric oil
pump for this purpose only when truck sits
longer than a few months in storage ...!!

Re: priming engine

I would pull the coil wire and crank it till there was pressure at the gauge in the cluster.

Stab it and steer it

But remember yur still injecting fuel. Maybe better to pull the connector off the dist??

I've seen engines sit for months, inside, and fire right up with no ill effects. But I would agree, I would much prefer to run the thing once in a while or prime it by cranking without fuel and without plugs (no load on the bearings that way). :2cents:

Re: priming engine

6-8 months is one thing, my ty has sat for ten years , i know what i should do but man it looks like a bitch to get that distributor out , then no room to get a drill in.

Thats true I would not worry about that myself cause it should prime up in like 30sec.or so. U could pull the ecm fuse that should do the trick.

thats why you unplug the connector going to the dizzy. and without the dizzy, your oil pump will not spin. the gear on the dizzy is the drive for the oil pump.

i figured that out the hard way. built a 383 sbc and didnt put the oil pump drive shaft in. had to pop off the freshly glued oil pan and put the shaft in. luckily i tried to prime it on the engine stand versus in the car.
