poly lock too short?

I just installed some arp rocker studs that were special order and are longer than the normal arp studs we use on the vortec conversions. I then put crane 1.6 gold rockers on and screwed all of the poly locks on. I then rotated the motor until the exhaust valve just started to work and attempted to adjust the intake valve. I began to tighten the lock until the pushrod could no longer be spun by hand. The problem i am having is the poly lock at that point is all the way down and the hex head on the lock is touching the rocker itself. Do i just need a taller set of poly locks or did i do something incorrecly here?

I don't know about the longer locks. That may be a option.

Otherwise the only things I can think of would be even longer studs. Or adding washers made to go between the head and the stud to raise it. What I did was to get a set of push rod guide plates. Then cut them so they would not interfere with my pushrods. Since I already had self aliening rockers. They raised the stud enough to thread the locking nuts down.

The studs that i have are fine. They are custom made to the proper length. The problem i am having is adjusting for the correct tension of the polylock. While tightening the poly lock until the pushrod can no longer spin freely the locks hex head bottoms out and hits the rocker itself. It seems i need taller locks but just wanted to make sure i did the adjustment process correctly.

I misunderstood. Yes when the exhaust lifter starts to move up. Adjust the intake valve.

Yes that is the procedure i did but the lock screws all the way down until the poly locks hex section bottoms out on the rocker. How forcefully should i be gripping and attempting to spin the pushrod? Maybe i am trying to spin it to hard?

You take the push rod on the valve you are adjusting. Rotate it back and forth until you feel the first light resistance.That is zero lash. Some do 1/2 turn more. You need to check manufacturers recommendations on that. Lock it down there. You are just tightening to far. On my comp 875 lifters it is 0 lash to 1/16 turn max.

On the exhaust valve turn the engine until the intake valve has gone all the way up and is almost all the way back down.

Are the poly locks you are using come with the rocker arms? I have the 1.6 gold crane and the hex portion does get close, but does not contact the upper section or sides of the rocker arm. Go on Crane's website, they may have more info on there as to lengths of the proper poly locks. I can go measure mine, as I have some extras from the V-8 set I used, but they are at the shop and it will be tommorow evening. They make some longer ones, but they are for stud girdles and will hit the stock valve covers. You might post a pic of what you are describing to help visualize. I may have a pic on photobucket of mine installed. I'll post it if it is.

I found a pic, if your poly lock is the correct one from crane, then maybe your pushrods are a little short. Look at this picture here:

The polylocks i have that came with the rockers are the third ones down .86 overall height. I think i was sent the wrong ones. It seems that i need the second ones down on the list. The hex heads are smashed right into the rocker. They have to be the wrong ones....i hope lol

When you get the lock issue resolved. Another thing to check on the valve train is to make sure the rocker arm has clearance on the retainer and spring. With aftermarket rocker.spring,and retainers this can be a problem sometimes.

Looks like they're too short. New ones or washers underneath if you're desperate. Also, as Phil said, check the clearance. I had 1.6 Crane Gold RRs like yours and in the photo and they would hit the retainer and not the valve stem. I went with Comp Cams in the end.

I just spoke with crane and the taller locks are supposed to come with them not the shorter ones that i currently have so at least thats figured out lol... It looks like the rockers work with the valve setup i have,

That's great. Sounds like as soon as you get the locks you will be pretty well set.
