Pitman arm vs pickle fork

Howdy,

One simple question. Can I separate my pitman arm from the relay rod with a pickle fork? If not, what kinda tool should I use? The service manual seems to be talking out something like a bearing puller...

TIA,

Good Question,

Your going to have fun with both. I use a small puller on those, Search the local parts store youll know it when you find it!

Thanks guys, I'll take an other shot with the picke fork. If it's not working I gonna locate a small bearing puller...

Hee hee... wait til you try to pull the pitman arm off the steering box if you think what you are pulling apart now is TIGHT.

I used picklefork for the one you are talking about and had to use a 10-ton puller for the steering box-pitman arm AND a picklefork. It finally 'exploded' off the box. When using a picklefork it doesnt hurt to use a 'MANLY' hammer. A couple of good whacks with a decent hammer and a pickle fork and it should come apart somewhat easily.

The steering box-pitman arm is another story tho... Lotsa penetrating lube there !

Yep, I know what you mean. My new box came with a 2wd arm. After a while I gave it up and took it to a local steering gear repair shop. They separated them in two minutes. So I'll follow this route once I get my old box out... :D

TIA,

K-D tools makes a tie rod puller that looks like a small pittmen arm puller. A two arm puller my not be tough enuff if the part is stuck hard.

The pickle fork won! :D Thanks to Ted, I've attacked from the drivers side fenderwell and it came out from the relay rod quite easy. So the stearing box is out of the truck. Hopefully I'll be able to put back the new one tomorrow. Thanks again...
