NASTE
Would naste members use a photogallery similar to the one we used to have. Post here and let me know. If there is enough interest I will set one up for us at no charge.

What's the deal with the NASTE site? I know it crashed forever ago. Is someone working on it?

nope, morgan and I haven't done anything because we don't have a host...

Junior offered to help but that fell through..

I won't host it on my boxes because they are not backed up at all and I don't want another crash.

as for hosting a gallery for everyone.. becareful if you are using a shared server.. 20-50 members, 100-200 pics each on average.. it will put quite a load on the server, your host might not appriciate that.

Re: Photo gallery

Is it hardware that we need? I have hardware in my office, but we have DSL connection. I can setup probably 300+ gb on a 3ghz server.

as for a design that takes a bunch of time and i don't think anyone has any extra at the moment.

you probably don't want to host anything on a dsl connection.

Re: Photo gallery

Yea i figured DSL was too slow. So when you say it isn't backed up, it's not running a raid 5? That was dumb that our old server wasn't at least mirrored.

our old server was FREE, provided by the place or by a friend that Eric knows. Its unfortunate that stuff was lost, but it was an older machine and Eric sent out plenty of notices to back up any pictures if you didnt want to lose them.

The gallery was really the only thing that was lost, I have the entire site saved on my computer otherwise, but like Ive said before, Im not going to put that site back up anyway unless it has some sorta user interface / database that people can log into and update information themselves because Im not doing it anymore.

I paid for everything myself, out of pocket.. hosting naste's site and my own personal sites wasn't a priority to me.. it still isn't..

my servers are cheapo pIII 1ghz, 1u servers.. I can't afford to drop a few grand on a decent server.. that and I don't work at that company anymore so I am not technically allowed to host anything there.

If we really wanted to get something together, i'm sure we could find a cheaper webhost and throw on a content management system or something with a gallery.. again shared servers can get bogged down with a large amount of users/websites running off of them.

I just can't afford to pay for it out of my pocket and collecting money is a pain in the ass.. besides i like the fact that naste is a relaxed club, no membership fees, no mandatory meetings, etc.. we all just love the trucks and enjoy hanging out.. He'll some of my best friends are guys i've met over the years just because i own a truck.

I might not have time to devote to local gatherings as much any more but i try to make the more national meets so I can see everyone i talk to on a daily basis.

Re: Photo gallery

I'm not complaining or anything. I'm just misinformed. I never even used the NASTE site since I've only owned my truck a couple years, I was looking forward to it though. So all we really need is a gallery? We pretty much use syty.net to setup meets etc. I like that there aren't mandatory meetings and membership fees also. I've only been able to make one meet :(

Re: Photo gallery

Well not sure what my hosting is but i believe it is shared and I have had it for a while and never really use so i figured that I would put in a gallery and let naste use it. If they dont like eh. But it is there if you guys want to use it.

Re: Photo gallery

Eric, my deal still pretty much still stands.
If you're having trouble with time and such on your end, maybe you can give me the rights to the domain name and let me run with it. I'll get whatever content we had on it from Morgan and get it up and running...

i'd be more than willing to help out with anything needed.. I do own the domain name and i'll gladly point it to whatever nameserver is requested.. as for setting up the site.. Morgan is right, we need a database driven site so each member can maintain their own profile..

I had some time today at work and found a framework for a ASP/MSSQL based site, but that would require a windows box to run on.. I'll look for a similar type of site that will run on php/mysql, I remember you saying your buddy's box was a VM on a heavy duty server, which would be more than enough, especially since it would only be running one site.

There are lots of opensource content management systems out there, some are easy to install others are impossible to install. I'd help out with whatever i can in setting it up as long as i have the time.

Got ya, gimme the rundown on whats needed again...Maybe we can have something up in time for the Nats

Truckless. For now.
Re: Photo gallery

If you're looking for content management that's DB driven, try Mambo. It's what I set up SyTy.org with. The install was pretty easy and painless and it gives you total control over users. You can give people access from simple "reader type" to full administration privs. Plus it's customizeable via templates, etc.

I need to go back through SyTy.org and clean it up again, but it might be just the ticket you need for NASTE.
