oil pan gasket installation

I have a VR oil pan gasket and would like to know if it would be a good or bad idea to put silicone gasket sealer in the corners, or is it better to install it dry?
Thanks for your help.

Re: oil pan gasket installation

I used that copper spray on both sides and I have zero leaks. I use that spray on all my gaskets except the head gasket and I've never had a leak. :knocks on wood:

But using silicone won't hurt anything except extra work when removing it later on.

I put a dab of the black Permatex on the corners. It sure wont hurt anything.

Thanks
That is what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if the permatex would bond to the gasket or act like a lubricant and make the gasket not seal. I hate leaks!!

It sticks well. It is probably not needed. But I hate leaks too.

Re: oil pan gasket installation

A bit of RTV is needed at the 2 joints between the front cover and block. It is also needed at the 2 joints between the rear main housing and the block. It fills the 4 small cracks between the surfaces. You may have a leak if you don't put RTV there.

You should not cover the whole gasket with any sealer. It will act as a lubricant and can possibly cause the gasket to sqeeze out when torquing.

Exactly, my only concerns are the corners and if the RTV would would cause more harm than good with the gasket being rubber, I will put the RTV in the corners only.
Thanks for everyones help.
