Oil gauge jumping around

Has anyone has the stock oil pressure gauge jump around? At idle the pressure is above the 3/4 mark, but jumps above and below that without any cause. WTF is going on?

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

I havent had this problem personaly, but i have seen it before in other vehicles. Sounds like your oil pressure sender is messin up on you. probly has an intermittent open/short in the sender. if you have an multi meter you could do a resistance and voltage check across the sending unit (not sure on the spec for resistance or voltage at idle, but i will look it up and get back to you). if the sending unit checked out ok, i would check the wires at the sender plug and make sure they are not corroded.

Mine did the same thing right before it completely stopped working.

Did you ever get it fixed? Was it the gauge, or the sender? Where is the sending unit for the oil gauge?

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

My sierra pickup did that when it was a hair under the full mark on oil, and then kept doing it for about an hour after, but then it stopped.

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

GM issued a service bulletin on this. It's the oil pressure sender unit. They updated the sender a long time ago. It takes a very bizarre socket to remove it and it's behind the distributor, tough to access. I have the replacement but never had the chance to replace it. I either have the socket and no access, or access and no socket. (but never both at the same time.)

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

Do you have to pull the distributor to get to it? I have access to the GM sending unit sockets, so thats not a problem.

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

I don't know, you might be able to do it without pulling the distributor but I bet your hands would take a beating with a lot of cuts & scrapes. You could take off the distributor cap at the very least and maybe the ignition coil. I guess you'd have to try and see. That's why I mentioned not having the socket when I had access. By that I meant, when I had the tranny out, or the distributor out, or the upper intake manifold off, etc..

I had the needle go all the way around on the oil guage and it just stuck there now. This is on both of my syclone and typhoon.

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

any good repair shop can hook a meter closer to the source and check to see if you have pressure. usually it's just the guage goin bad, but better to be safe than sorry. have it checked

PS: my camaro autometer guage bounces around all the time when it's warmed up and runnin. always has and i know i have pressure.

Re: Oil gauge jumping around

Typhoonran, you'll have to visit either RockAuto.com and browse the catalog, or visit/call your GM Dealer and ask for the replacement oil pressure switch. For the GM Oil Pressure switch socket, I'm not sure where to get it but you might try AutoZone/AdvanceAuto they tend to have the weird sockets..

Guys with wound up oil pressure gauges, this has been covered a lot of times (so search if you want additional advice) but to sum it up, I pulled apart my dash (plan a full afternoon for that, very tough to access some fasteners without losing them in a bottomless pit) and took out the cluster, flipped the gauge back to normal, and cut off the tip of a small nail, painted it black, and super glued it onto my cluster. Now it works perfectly like the factory intended and it cannot wind up anymore. Take a look, you can see my additional pin right above 80 PSI on my oil gauge. In the truck, you can barely tell it wasn't factory. (A perfectionist might use a drop or two of Testors Dullcote to remove the shine from the superglue.)
