O-ring Upper Plenum

Here's a couple of pics of my upper intake plenum that we o-ring'd today. This is a new service we'll be offering to the SyTy community. We can o-ring your upper intake for $75.00 plus shipping, for those that are interested. This does not include removing the webbing like in the pics, I just did that for mine. If interested, just PM me.

Curious.... what the benefit in removing the webbing?

Better flow across all the cylinders in theory, we'll see if it works. Plus I wanted to keep a "somewhat" stock look:roll:.

I like the idea of o-ringing the intake plenum, (IIRC) especially since the the intake gasket was discontinued, and having less places to form leaks.

Did you knife edge the dividers in the lower intake? I know there was someone talking about removing the dividers in the upper plenum a while back, better never saw anything happen. I'm curious if this help air distribution in a real world application, it theoretically should help in to even airflow in if pushing lots of boost.

Get with RENZ and O-ring his spacers. Then we can keep our intake OEM and just bolt on a double O-ringed spacer.

How much for that? That's what I want.

I too like this idea, but let me clear up one piece of misinformation....the lower intake to head gaskets were discontinued from VR, but NOT the plenum gasket. Not yet.

Re: O-ring Upper Plenum

this is sweet....how are you going to form the o-ring itself? Or do you just plan on using straight piping and fuse the ends together somehow?

nice werk!

was curious about the webbing, tho. since you removed the webbing on the upper intake do you think it would help to file down to a point or round off the walls on the lower webbing for even better flow? in theory, of course.

Very cool! What is the OD of that o-ring? Must be huge!

I used .110 o-ring material. Just cut it to length. The o-ring groove has a -.015 fit, so the o-ring fits in there nice & tight. I don't see any need to glue or fuse the ends together, I cut mine just a hair long & squeezed it into the groove. I may put a dab of some black gasket maker at the seam when I install it just for a little insurance, but I don't think it'll really need it.

I rounded the dividers on the lower intake rather than making it like a knife edge, I was trying to think more like hydrodynamics, trying to make the air "flow" as easy as possible. The idea is to try & help out those back two cylinders when running max boost, somewhere north of 25 psi;)

Now that you have the length find a bearing/hydraulic supply house, they should be able to order a continuous ring. Probably not a lot of $$ either. Otherwise a dab of stuff will work. Any leak would be real tiny anyway. Neat project.

Code what?

I would assume he choose an o-ring the length and thickness required to sit inside his groove. I'm curious as to how much the o-ring cost is for a replacement? I would guess around 5$.

I like this because using a high temp buna o ring will last over and over with the plenum being removed. Unlike tearing up a gasket every other time
