hey guys, im looking for a sy/ty in the Dallas Texas area.... i found a local guy with a 93 typhoon... he is on these boards... his typhoon has 162k miles, new tranny...all stock!!

im kinda penny penching, so i cant afford those rare 30k trucks that go for $20k+.... im looking for a somewhat high millage, but this is a little higher than i had planned on....

my question is... how do these sy/tys hold up?? at 160k miles, is it about to need a TON of work??? new motor, turbo, etc etc???

what can i expect??

All trucks are different depending on their owner and maintanence / upkeep. Some higher milage trucks have been on the road and keep in good running order. Take it for a ride and listen to what she tells you. Or ask someone to check it out with you if you are not familiar with what to look for in a used performance vechicle. I was also looking at something with higher milage because I planned to drive her daily. I did not want something TOO nice to drive. I priced Ty's for a couple years and when I had the money I found one with 73K and bought it for > 9K. 6+ months and 10K miles later I am very happy with my purchase.

You could go with this factory shortblock that someone was selling for $1,750, or you could go with this McCoy motor for $15,000, or somewhere in between. I chose the in between route. Bear in mind though, if you bought the $15,000 motor, plan on another $2,000 for a tranny, $1,000 for a rear end, $2,000 for a turbo and downpipe, $2,000 for an intercooler system, $1,000 for a fuel system, $2,000 for an engine management system, $400 for a Gilbert propshaft, $500 for maybe alky, and $1,000 for all the gauges you'll need. The toss another $2-5k in the bank because something always comes up that you don't plan on.

On the age of trucks, my daily driver is bone stock, and has 134k on it, and runs very strong and clean. No smoke, burps, whines, grinds, etc. I'm of the "if it's made it 130k, it'll make it another 100k" school of thought, but these trucks aren't Honda 4-bangers, designed to run until the bodies rot off the frame.

As mentioned, see what it feels / sounds like, and if possible, have someone go with you to check it out who knows these trucks.

Re: Noobie with questions

ok, so lets say I go with a stock block in the future, how much power will a stock block hold?? whats its potential?? i mean, can you add on the upgraded SC, and all the regular bolt ons???

as for 1/4 times, whats the limit also for a stock block... can it get to 11s w/ stock block and bolt ons?

Re: Noobie with questions

email sent to you. this has been discussed a ton. If you use the "search" and look up stuff like stock motor, stock, etc. etc., you'll find a ton of info. I'll email you something though.

Re: Noobie with questions

when I did my motor this past march I planned on spending around $3500.00 for the whole job in the end it was about $4000.00 easy,so at least plan to spend that much for the job,now I got the motor 30 over eagle rods forged pistons L35 heads stock cam and thats about it everything else went back to the way it was.now im gonna do all the bolt ons and that could be another $4k easy.so good luck.oh and dont forget when you get the motor done at first your gonna say that the truck seams slow, dont worry once you put about 1000 miles on the rebuild the truck will come to life. so baby that first 1000 miles like I did.

Re: Noobie with questions

im not sure what to say to that I havent hit the track yet,and right now im having over boosting probs so im trying to figure that out right now but I guess as long as its running back to normal it should run somewhere in the low 13s now before mods I guess
