No spool in 1st, code 43...(91 syclone)

Hopefully somebody can help...

My friend owns a 91 syclone and we just did a full tune up and put in a TD06 turbo in his 'clone. But we are still having a problem with his car. In first gear the turbo doesn't spool at all until 2nd gear and occasionally the fuel cuts out during WOT.

His ECM keeps throwing a CODE 43, I believe it is Electronic ignition timing or something similar to that. Any ideas what could be going on. The car smells like it is running really rich. And it has a difficulty starting. While we were working on it, it had a full tank of gas and that sat for 9 months or so. But this is the 2nd new tank of gas after that. Please help... I feel bad that his baby is out of order.

THanks...

43 is ESC. you usually get this when you set the timing. BC you have to pull the timing connector when setting it. reset the ECM and see if it reappears. also try hooking the WG directly to the turbo. you should get 8-10psi in stock trim. if the 43 reappears make sure the tan wire is not unhooked. if you have no timing then it would be hard to make boost in 1st.

Check the timing - its probably out 20 or more degrees...... thats a big thing that will make it not spool in first....

We double checked the timing and it is exactly at factory specs. We pulled the timing connector when we set and checked it both times. The tan wire is hooked up and the wastegate is properly hooked to the turbo. Still no boost in 1st gear. Could it be a problem with the intercooler? My friend currently has a 160 deg thermostat and the intercooler doesn't turn on till what 200 or so. Also what abou the knock sensor? Any idea where that could be or if that could be?

Thanks Again.

your intercooler definatly needs to work. make sure you "tap" into the yellow wire on the firewall and run it to ground. this will energize the pump to run all the time. beyond that. you need to look at your turbo. pull the oragne boot off the front and make sure there is no damage to the comp wheel. check and make sure the WG actuator isnt blown, and will provide the clamping force to hold the WG shut.
