[NJ] I might need some help buying Ty #2008

Ok so my wife has given me the OK to come up with a plan to buy. It isn't 100% in stone that she will let me, but the fact she hasn't said no is very encouraging. However I have a lot of logistics to work out. I have no way easy way to get the Ty to me. If was half the distance, I would just use my AAA+ and pay the extra fees. So to have this happen I need help. Also other idea's are welcome, but remember I have to convince my wife who is on fence already.

My idea is to have the work done in NJ. I would probably need to make 2 trips down.

1st I think the first transmission can be pulled apart and cleaned out. I could do this myself however, I am little concerned if I need any replacement parts, this could take a while waiting for parts. Does anyone know of tranny shop (or anyone else) in the local area that you would trust to pull the tranny apart and clean it. I could easily clean out the valve body myself.

2nd I need a place to R & R the tranny, I can do it, but I would need a place to do it and some help would be helpful as well. I will pay $$. If someone want to do the R&R I will pay them as well. I can use my AAA towing to move the truck around NJ.

Logistically I see it this way.

-One weekend, I need to goto NJ, buy Ty, have it towed, pull tranny, and then drop it off to be fixed.

-Next weekend (or two), I go down pickup tranny, put it back in and then drive home.

I have a big driveway and another ty in it wouldn't hurt..

if the truck is in new brunswick now it is about 30-45min away from me..

level 10 transmissions is local to me.. I don't know if i'd trust any of the other local small shops to do it.. although i've heard good things about a few..

I've dropped a tranny before and while its not exactly fun i could do it again.. I'm 4 hours from boston, if you wanted to stay the night I do have an extra bed (it is however a twin bed).. my girlfriend works weekends so aside from my projects i could probably help out..

i'd expect to be compensated to the fullest for my time and the privilege of working with me. =)

i wouldn't spend 2 trips doing it personally. I'd borrow a truck, rent a uhaul trailer and tow the thing home and work on it at home. There are always some unforseeable things that make having the thing hundreds of miles away very unuserfriendly - i speak from experience. It took me about 3 more trips than i thought to get the primer ty driveable, and it was only 100 miles away.

Plus the cost of 2 trips would prolly cost more than the cost of 1 trip of renting a trailer....plus all that time you'd spend driving you can donate to cleaning the Typhoon.

One of the problems is borrowing a truck. I can borrow my best friends truck, but its 2 hours away in the wrong direction, I would ended up driving 8 hours to get and return it. My father has a Toyota truck (also 2 hours away) that he would tow it with but I don't know about that truck doing 5 hours with it coming back. He tows a 7000-8000# boat with it as far as 2 hours but I am not sure if I am comfortable that. It also has 230K miles on it as well. My father is also weird about me or anyone else (including my mother) driving his cars alone, mostlky likely he would go with me as well.

Car dolly is the cheapest, rent it 1 way from uhaul.

How many hours is the truck away? I agree though trying to do it with several trips be a PITA.

I say get someone to drive it north till it stops moving....then trailer it from there. Rebuild another tranny for it and have it ready to swap.

My friend up north with a truck will be visiting his inlaws in CT next weekend, so maybe I can talk him into helping me out.

Hey Dave I Have An Enclosed And An Opened If We Can Figure Out The Details I Can Help Out With The Trailering. My House Is Closer To You Than Jimmys In Milford If That Helps Out. You Can Do It In My Drive. I Probably Have The Tools To Do The Job Except For The Tranny Jack. We Will Do Barter Second Set Of Hands On The R&r, The Towing(with Or Witout Me,meaning You Take My Dually And Trailer) For Some Tuning.

Well, that might work out very well for me. I would probably just need a Truck/Trailer ride to CT. I could AAA+ tow it back to my place from your house. Once back In my garage, I can R & R the transmission myself. We could trade for some tuning.

At this point, I haven't talk to the Typhoon owner yet.

Heres my take...why not have Don (Raist) rent a trailer or maybe use his own. Tow it half the trip which would put him somewhere maybe in NY. He could meet up with me or come to my house where I could easily tow it up to you from NY. You'd probably be out the cost of gas/tolls and maybe the rental...
Or piece the trip together this way and add another member from CT and cut it into short legs.
Then you can pull it at your leisure and have waller or blake build you a tranny. This way you know for certain a Sy/Ty guy is doing the work and save the time running all over

That is pretty much what I have decide I will do if I buy the Ty, I will have it towed to my house and work on it where I have my tools. As of right now, I haven't been able to contact the owner, so I haven't followed up with anyone about towing it. KrazyKaese told me Eric was on vacation in England, I am hoping its not too long of vacation...

I have driveway space if you have emergency issues, and I can help if you pass through Essex, Passaic, or Bergen counties.

You should put together a call list of anyone in the area you will be in if you need assistance etc -Could make life easier for your trip.
