Newbie Question - Boost Control

What is the most cost-effective way you guys have controlled your boost on these trucks? Mine is mostly stock with NO mods to the turbo, watstegate, IC, or injectors. When I get into it part throttle, the boost will shoot up to 10 psi or so and then drop back down to 0 psi without me moving my foot on the throttle.

It sounds like you're having other problems besides just boost control. Like maybe your wastegate isn't adjusted properly or something. You shouldn't be losing boost that suddenly.

sounds like you might have an open exhaust. thats the way they act when you open the exhaust on a stock build.

I use a profec b. The control is sick. You need to see what's going on with your truck. Run dm or find someone with it. Have you done anything to your exhaust like john had mentioned? Has the truck had a tuneup or vac lines replaced? Is the truck knocking causing the computer to pull boost?

I found boost control on the stock build could be rather good with an open exhaust, when I richened the mixture up considerably. I would address the normal vacuum line stuff, make sure the actuator isnt sticking (mine would stick when warm and cause strange boost issues) and try turning up the fuel pressure.

Good luck,
Daron

Good stuff!!

Good stuff!!

Hmmmmm........ I have not opened the exhaust on the truck myself, and the previous owner didn't tell me that the cat was gutted or anything. I have knowledge of how boost works and how wastegates work, as I have owned and modified a Buick Grand National for many years.

This truck will hit whatever boost I want really quickly without problem, so I know that the wastegate is not sticking. The truck does not overboost at all, reaching 14-15 psi at WOT each time I've tried to get there.

The problem that I'm having is when I go part throttle, say achieving 10-12 psi of boost right off the bat, the truck lays back down and settles around 0 psi. If I increase the throttle a bit, the boost will rise back up without problem. I have come to understand that if the exhaust has anything opened up on a stock setup that I would be overboosting it all the time, but that is not the case.

Thanks so far for all the replies, I really do appreciate the help that this list has given me thus far.

Re: Good stuff!!

The wastegate sticking issue I mention actually manifests with various symptoms. Only way to tell if your wastegate is getting sticky is to bring your engine up to normal temps after removing your passengers side inner fenderwell. Jack the passengers side up, remove the clip holding the actuator rod onto the wastegate. Then attempt to move the wastgate arm and you will likely notice there is considerable drag.

This issue may or may not produce overboost, depending on how much resistance and where in the travel of the arm the resistance is. What it can do is really muck with boost control. Lets say your wastegate is sticking open briefly, then your boost would be reduced until it decided to close...

It is just one issue that is good to eliminate when boost control issues are encountered in our application.

Good point Daron! Thanks for that insight. I've never removed the inner fenderwell on this truck. How hard is that to do?

Man, this thing is SO much harder to work on than my GN.....and I thought it was bad.

Hey Tom,previous owner of #0147 here.

Man I miss that truck,it's the absolute fastest bone stock Ty I've ever seen.

The inner fenderwell removal is a piece of cake.Probably 10 or so 13 or 14 mm bolts hold it in.2 of them are under the front bumper.Jack up the truck, remove the bolts, inner fender will come right out.

You may wanna redo all the vacuum lines on the truck.I know they were the originals when I sold it to Aaron.

Thanks, Jimmy. I knew you'd chime in.....you always find my posts somehow. You must have REALLY loved this truck. Nowadays she rides on 2000 Camaro SS rims which give it a much better look IMO.

On a rainy day I'll try to take the inner fender well out and see if my wastegate is my problem. :drinking:

Gawd, I thought changing the spark plugs was bad on this thing.......

Basically it comes down to the fact that the wastegate isn't designed well enough to control the turbo on these trucks. Opening up the exhaust lets the turbo flow more without improving the wastegate situation. This makes it even harder for the wastegate to control boost properly in most cases, though some people get acceptable results.

Christian Dionne and JS both made PTE-style downpipes. It covers the whole back of the turbo. If you open up the service port on the back of the turbo, the wastegate has a straight shot into your modified downpipe. This is supposed to help the stock setup a great deal without really changing much. It simply lets the wastegate work better. Since upgrading the downpipe isn't a bad idea anyway, this is the route I plan to go eventually...

Tom,

I assume you are getting your boost readings using the stock gauge? I can't believe no one else chimed in to say how inaccurate it is. Anytime I had a boost quesion the first thing they asked was if I was getting my readings from the stock gauge and then chastised for assuming the readings were correct. Not to say that you don't have a problem, just stating that the stock gauge should not be used to diagnose boost issues (and/or find them).

When ever I ran DM on this truck, nothing appeared to be out-of-whack for wastegate/boost amounts. The Cat has not been gutted, but I think it has the Borla exhaust (Jimmy?).

I fixed several vacuum leaks on the hard elbows on the lines right by the wastegate solenoid, I suppose they could be having problems again, but I was getting overboost on full-throttle, not loss of boost at part throttle.

Hey Aaron!

Hey Aaron!

Nice to see you back up on the board bud.

I am fully aware of the factory boost gauge issue, as it is exactly the same as my Grand National was. Trust me when I say this is not a "gauge" issue, but a seat-of-the-pants one. I actually feel the boost rise then fall and then creep back up (part throttle only). My GN did this at one point in it's life, and it turned out to be bad grounds on the block. I suppose a rooting around underneath this thing is in order.

For what it's worth, I'm about to stick an Autometer vacuum/boost gauge in there just for kicks.

Tom,

I'm over the grief of losing my Ty, so I thought I would see how things were going for you on here.

Anyway, does this boost drop happen at all speeds/gears? Its not during the 2-3 shift is it? I would think that would be normal to see the boost drop when it shifts, maybe not.

No, the boost doesn't drop at all speeds and gears. As a matter of fact, if I'm in OD and then kick it down gently the boost stays rock steady wherever it enters at. Just baffles me to no end, but then again, these are turbo V6's and they are b!tchy motors.

I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill here anyway.

Oh, by the way, I took her to the track one time and she ran a best of 14.13 @ 96 MPH. I was very pleased with that since it weighed in at a stout 3950 pounds! Did you ever get any better out of it?

I never ran it at a track, so I have no official times, only what DM gave me, and I think low 14's were the best I saw too. Pretty quick for a stock Ty.

And yes, the quirks of that Ty can drive you crazy.

i'm not another previous owner of 147 but i experienced the same thing you're going through with my ty. i got the boost "sine wave" at wot as well. i tried replacing the solenoid vacuum harness but that didn't work. the only way i found i could get steady boost was when i unplugged the solenoid. yep, that worked.....it held steady at a whoppin' 8 lbs. of boost and that was it. no good.
i got fed up and eventually went with an external wastegate and electronic boost controller (Greddy Profec-b). that got me the "plateau" i was looking for.
you could perhaps go with an electronic boost controller and use it with the stock wg; the profec-b is capable. such a set up with the stock wg can be put together without messing with the cosmetics and integrity of the motor....and it's a reversable mod. the only concern i think you'd have with this would be setting your boost limit too high. If you run the stock chip, i'd recomend you set your boost no higher than 15 cuz your map sensor can "see" above that. hope my .02 helps.

good luck tom.
