New "B" with questions

1993 Typhoon
Hello, I am a new member and would like to apologize for the some what long first message. I am some what of a new Ty owner (1993 Typhoon with 72k) as of Jan 05. Recently my stock turbo took a poop (the factory plastic air box broke off and went for a ride thru the turbo). So when it came to to replace I decided to step it up a notch. I ordered a "stage 3" kit from ATR. The install went fairly smooth and I just finished up last night. The first (and hopefully only) issue that I have is that I am constantly over boosting. No matter where I set the needle valve (boost controller) when I hit the 3000k to 3500k rmp range I start doing the KR shuffle. Now I know the first thing that everyone will ask is where is your datamaster info. There in is my next question, what is an expensive alternative to buying a laptop to run the datamaster program. I currently do not own a lap top and even though this may sound stupid I was wandering if the was a version that could run on my PDA Phone (treo 600). If not is there another solution that you could leave in the vehicle that doesn't look goofy? I know go ahead and make fun I'm ready for the embarrassment.

Thank you,
Brian Kolonia

plx-500r will read air fuel mixture and knock among other things but i strongly recommend getting a laptop with datamaster it will tell you a lot of information

Brian, welcome to the board. There's no need to apologize or prepare for embarrasment. I'm not familiar with the Stage 3 Kit from ATR so I was wondering if you could outline what parts it included? Your solution may be as simple as adjusting the wastegate arm if you have an internal wastegate rod, otherwise if it's an external there may be an adjustment nut that has the same effect but my knowledge on external wastegates is very limited so I can't say. You definitely took a step in the right direction asking for help when you noticed Knock retard.

As for your lack of laptop, I was in the exact same situation when I got my truck. I borrowed a hand held scan tool to begin with and then borrowed someone's laptop to get a few initial files until I could finally get my own. You can get used laptops DIRT cheap nowadays, people are throwing them away. All you need is a Pentium 133MHz with 32MB RAM or better. Honest to god that's all you need. I can record 4 rec/sec on that laptop and its what I used with the first few years of my truck. I tried a Pentium 120 and it was too slow. An old laptop can be had for less than $100 complete with charger and CD Rom drive depending where you look. I scored an ultra tiny 500MHz 128MB RAM laptop for free from a friend (just by luck.) The MOST IMPORTANT THING if you get a laptop is, make SURE it has a real serial port. Most new laptops are USB-only which is a Bitch to try and connect to Datamaster. Most all old ones had a real serial port to be used for old Palm Pilots or Serial Mouse's etc. It looks like a 9 pin rectangle/trapezoid shape port. If you have to choose between two laptops, get the one with the serial port!

Hope this helps, now that my post is longer you don't need to feel bad about yours anymore. Oh and the TTS Datamaster gauge you looked at, on the page it said it was only for 99+ trucks.

Re: New "B" with questions

Thanks, looks like e-bay to the rescue for the laptop. As far as the stage 3 kit here it is from my poor memory (I left the list at home):
160 thermostat
Battery relocate kit
Cold air filter / inlet kit
850 CFM turbo
3” ss down pipe
3” ss full exhaust deleting the cat
External billet adjustable waste gate with adjustable needle valve
Bitbull chip
Aux heat exchanger / intercooler kit

Re: New "B" with questions

Welcome aboard Brian!
My knowledge on external wastegates stems from a friend who turbocharged his MKIII VW VR6 Golf. I helped on the install and did a little fab work for it. He had a Tial unit with a 8psi spring. Not sure how the needle valve adjustment works, but all the externals I've seen work on spring pressure to control exhaust flow. Is it possible the wrong spring is installed on your wastegate? Also, where are you getting your boost line to hook up to the external? Most applications I've seen come off the compressor housing right at the turbo outlet. This guarentees the best boost reading and fastest reacting wastegate.
I too am looking at purchasing Datamaster so I can't be much help there, sorry.

Re: New "B" with questions

Is your external boost controller set up properly? What is your vacuum/boost source?

Re: New "B" with questions

Yes the external waste gate receives its single from the compressor. As far as spring pressure I have contacted ATR and they believe that I am having the problems due to using an 90deg elbow I had to piece together on my own because they left theirs out of the box. I should receive it tomorrow but I believe that it won’t make a difference

Re: New "B" with questions

If you're getting a laptop from eBay or some place with a large selection; I should mention in my opinion, a 300MHz-500MHz with 128MB RAM provides the best performance. 500Mhz or beyond, you can run Datamaster at full 10 records a second recording speed, if you wanted to (I run 5 rec/sec normally) so in terms of Datamaster there isn't any benefit going beyond the ~500Mhz zone.

This elbow goes where? I hope it's not a 90 degree for the boost source to the wastegate. You could have a sensing problem then.

Re: New "B" with questions

There is a 90deg on the compressor and a 90deg on the external wastegate. They get connected with a control (needle) valve.
