need help

got of the highway the other day and my truck started running rough. It sounded like it was missing a little bit and needed to be adjusted. I took it to a guy that mechanic thats never worked on my truck before but said he was familiar with and could fix it. The first thing he ask me to do was change the oil because it smelled burnt and drive it to see if it improved. After a week of of new oil and gas the truck still ran the same so i let him do a diagnostic on the truck. He told me that my timing was off and that my lifters and cam wasnt right. He quoted me a price of 1600.00 which I thought was a little high. He said he wanted to replace the dist cap, rotor, sparkplugs wireset( turbo gm) Cam, Lifters and Timing Change, intake set, t.c. cover set. The of the parts are supposed to be GM. 85.00 for diagno, about $1000.00 in labor and 600.00 for parts.what should I do?

Re: need help

Run. To a different mech.

Try to explain what you mean by missing a little bit. At idle? cruising? Under boost? When was the last tuneup?

Exactly, run.... far, far, far away from this "mechanic". Find someone on here that's loacl to you and see if they can reccomend... or look around to see who others have had good luck with.

Work through it methodically.

Does your check engine light come on? You need to get the code off of it.

Is your cap/dist loose? Start thr truck and reach back and turn it anti clockwise/ clockwise a little bit and see if it is easy to adjust.

Have you got a timing light?

Start with a cap and rotor for $25

Look through every one of your ign leads - take them off, see if they got burned through.

Does it idle ok or is it only when giving it gas?

DO NOT USE THIS MECHANIC. He's going to guess and do everything you will have to do but he's going to charge you for it.

Re: need help

bought the truck last may. hasnt had a tune up since I bought. When you start the truck it just has a rough sound to it. He claims the lifters are sticking and thats the reason it sounds like that. when the truck is at idle and driving you notice how much it is missing, on the highway it seems to run better.

Re: need help

no check engine light. had my truck check out by some fellow syclone owners about 3 months ago and they felt the only thing I needed was a external wastegate because my truck didnt have one when I bought it.

Re: need help

I would think if the timing was out of wack you'd get a CEL but eitherway the first thing i'd check would be to see if the distributor cap can be turned easily by hand like mentioned above. Then i'd look over the plug wires really good.. look for any burns or rips and if so replace. I'd pop the cap and look at the condition of the inside of the cap and rotor and replace since these trucks eat them up real easy.

Also go over and check your vacuum lines for any cracks

Typically the standard mechanic will do more harm then good with these trucks because they aren't the norm and even most of the performance shops have problems getting things right on these trucks unless they have experience with them.

Many people have that misconception when in fact it's just our fuel injectors tick very loud. Not saying there's not a problem with them, but 99/100 that's not it.

Start slow and follow others advice.

Where are you located?

Re: need help

Reason I ask about the EGR is this...

At cruise condition, EGR is recirculated to reduce emissions and make sure all the fuel is burnt (I think). At wide throttle/higher RPM i.e freeway speeds, it's ok but if the EGR stays open, you get those same crappy gases at idle and it makes it really rough.

We found this out when we swapped an RPM EGR delete plate on a friend's truck. If the EGR got stuck open while on the freeway, it will run like crap at low speed and idle but back on the freeway, you're good.

I'd start there.

Re: need help

Check tthe distributor when you do a normal tune up to see if there is oxidation inside.
I had this issue with my truck. Changed the module and Dizzy and all was well.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: need help

Give the vehicle a general tune up. That means a new AC DELCO coil, distributor cap, rotor, ICM, ignition wire, and spark plugs. Be sure your spark plug wire is in the looms and none are touching the exhaust manifolds. .

I had a dead cylinder on my S10 which cause the engine to nearly die on the freeway. I knew it was not the spark plugs because they had less than 3000 miles on them. I examined at the ignition wires to make certain they were routed through the looms and I found #2 spark plug wire was laying on the exhaust manifold and had a burned spot. It was not completely burned through but the spark plug voltage was shorting to the exhaust manifold. One short on one ignition wire can cause the ICM to start failing just like you cut off the ignition key. The AC Delco HEI ignition systems are powerful and must have good ignition wires. The wire must not have even a minor short. Even a minor short can knock out the ICM,.Fortunately, the ICM in my S10 appears to be undamaged. I found the short before it could do any damage to the ICM.

Re: need help

thanks, ill go pick up my truck today. I'm in Tulsa, Ok

Hey man,we'll fix you right up.

Okay here's my deal:Obviuosly the "mechanIc" you took your truck to is a full blown retard.

I mean c'mon, change your oil to fix a miss?

That is the first red flag (well actually the second since he decided to work on something he doesn't know jack shit aboot)

Then he says your lifters are sticking. This is something you tell a housewife that you are fixing to rape their wallet if you are a scumbag. I know he didn't check shit.He just said something that sounds like a big problem. That's how these ******s roll.

He'll "fix" all that shit then tell you you need a new engine, quote you $5500 for a rebuild, then slap a freshly painted junkyard motor into your Ty.

So let's get down to basics:

What plugs are currently in your truck?

What grade gas do you use?

Has the fuel filter ever been changed?
Any vac leaks?

Got Datamaster/Tunerpro?

Any smoke blow out of the oil filler cap with truck running and cap off?

Timing set right?

Ect..

Re: need help

Just got my truck back from the gmc local dealer, I have a friend who's a mechanic there. He basically did a tune up which was plugs, wires, cap, and starter. Also got the compression on the motor checked. When I went to pick it up he told me how much a bitch it was to work on and told me everything was good as far as the tune up. Check the timing with the timing light and said that was good. He showed me the old plugs and 2 of them were hammered! I got ready to leave and started my truck and it sounded a little better then it did when I dropped it off but it was still noticeably loud, making a knocking noise. Drove off and it seemed to have most of the power back but I know something isnt right. I live in Tulsa, Ok is there anybody in the area to help me out?

lean and damage the plug it will be better to find somebody
that has experience with these turbo trucks !!!

P.S better check those pistons and turbo you may have
internal damage from plug parts going in turbo and engine !!!
