Need better handling!

wat do i need to do to get the typhoon to handle better. just got bilstein sports and still doesnt handle to hot. got the rear sway and 2 inch lowering blocks. rear bottoms out when going over speed bumps or decent bumps in the road. front is stock. any ideas? got corvette wheels on it 305 rear and 275 both 40 series. xtreme quick ratio steering box. do they make stiffer springs for the front. dont really want to lower it and what can i do about the rear. i heard adding an additional leaf?

get rid of your tires or you will soon be shoping for a new viscous clutch. front and rear tires must have the same diameter!!
for the handling: best for the front is a coilover setup but it´s a bit pricy. check the front for worn bushings/balljoints and ad a bigger swaybar.

I do not think we need a coil over set up to have a good handeling truck. I have gone the same route as posted above with the addition of FS Bar greaseable urethane bushings. I have yet to install my Borgenson shaft and add those beefy Eldbrock tie-rod sleeves and another alignment. I think this should help. I will also have them check all the front end bushings before the alignment. My tires are also starting to wear. I want to check everything first and fix only what is needed to keep her straight w/o the expense of the coil overs.

275 front/315 rear tires ARE the same diameter.

Everything I've read says the same, but he is running 40 series all around, not 35 on the 315's.

I haven't been able to get as much lean out of my truck as I wanted, but it still pulls some really nice lateral G's around a corner. I've got 2 inch blocks on the rear. The front torsions are loosened to match. I'm running fully poly on the front upper and lower control arms, and front swaybar. Also, I've got a beltech rear swaybar. Koni shocks front and rear, set full stiff. And I've been running BFG KDW's or Eagle F1 GS-D3's on the street, and an old set of Yokohama A-008R's for autocrossing, all on stock rims.

Like I said, it doesn't handle as great as I want to, but it does handle 500x better than when I first got the truck!

315 or 275 refer to the width of the tire which we all know doesn't matter when it comes to possible damage to the transfer case.. it's the diameter of the wheel you should be concerned with I believe example 275/40/17 :)

judging by his post he runs:
front: 275/40/xx
rear: 305/40/xx
which are not the same diameter period and will damage his viscous in the long run.

Actually, the thing you really NEED to be concerned with is outside diameter.



The problem is that OUTSIDE DIAMETER is not directly specified.

Section width (the 275 or 305 or 315) is a factor.

Aspect ratio (the 30 or 35 or 40) is a percentage. Combined with the section width it gives you the sidewall height.

Wheel Diameter (in your example 17") is important, but not critical. You can get 2 different wheel diameter / tire combinations to work if you're clever.


So, outside diameter is determined roughly (you should go by the manufacturer's specs over a calculation) by:

Section Width x Aspect Ratio / 25.4 = Sidewall Height (in inches).
(example: 275 x .40 / 25.4 = 4.33")
(example: 305 x .40 / 25.4 = 4.80")
Wheel Diameter + Sidewall Height x 2
(example: 17" + (4.33"x2) = 17" + 8.66" = 25.66"
(example: 17" + (4.80"x2) = 17" + 9.60" = 26.60"

That's a 1" difference in outside diameter (almost 4%) and the transfer case WILL NOT like that. Goal is zero difference, under 1% is probably acceptable.

Missed the part about both sidewalls being 40 series. The Jedi is a busy man, and does several hundred things at once.

...while the dia difference is not good for the transfer case, handling (IMHO) can be effected by:
-Tire Compound, Tire Tread Design, Tire Pressure, Tread Depth and tire wear
-Sidewall Flexibility, Sidewall Construction and Sidewall height
-Tire Width and proper fitting on Tire Rim (cupping or ballooning)
-Tire Balance front to rear and side to side
-Front and Rear Alignment/Tracking
-Use or non-use of rear and/or front sway bar (adjustment and thickness)
-Shocks and their settings (rebounding, compression, travel, foaming)
-Spring rate and composition (along with sprung/unsprung weight)
-Front to rear transfer weight during braking, acceleration, turning
-Steering box and ratio (and possible use of a steering damper)
-and of course front/rear suspension components (ball joints, etc).

One could have "sticky" tires and a lousy suspension setup with incorrect tire pressures
and create oversteer, understeer or braking weight transfer problems by overloading
the handling characteristics of a vehicle. Ive seen the champ/indy cars adjust downforce
and tire pressures to 1/2 psi to dramatically change handling....and if you consider our
vehicles being 4,000 lbs vs 2,000 then a lot of things come into play other than tire dia
(but it does contribute if one considers skinny/tall tires vs fat/short tires - ie wagon wheels
vs formula 1 wheels).

Lastly, when your talking about roads/highway handling (vs track conditions) one has
to consider concrete vs asphalt vs seams vs grooves vs oil residue etc.
ZR1 275/315s will tend to follow every groove and create wandering on imperfect streets.
But they probably improve one`s cornering ability. Then theres pot holes, dirt/gravel/stones
curbs, water/hydroplaning, wind, 18-wheelers, temperature of the pavement and such to consider.

Personally I think more "information" is required to determine how the owner wants the
vehicle to handle on what type of roads under what type of conditions to determine a cure...

Have you gone for a ride in stevens red TY. He has coil overs. His handles good for a ty. Compare with that.
