MSD 6BTM ignition.

Why doesn't anybody use these on our trucks? I used the search, and it only comes up with THREE posts, none of them informative, and one of them being mine.... Whats the deal? It has a nifty boost retard feature that allows you to retard timing 1 to 3 degrees per poound of boost if you start to knock.
Thanks,

Re: MSD 6BTM ignition.

because there is no need to retard the timing if it isnt detonating, regardless of the amount of boost. Our stock computers have an ESC module which retards the timing when knock is present, so esentially it does the same thing but in a more reliable and aggressive manner (only the KB street chip completely eliminates the ESC). The BTM is used on vehicles not originally equipped with forced induction, so no matter how hard your vehicle is detonating it is only going to pull out a fixed number of degrees.. Our factory computers will attempt to pull timing out until the knock is completely gone, regardless of how much boost is being applied..

Cool. Thanks Mike. I guess there is no need to shell out the extra $150 for the BTM over the 6AL.

Re: MSD 6BTM ignition.

you dont even need the 6al unless you need the imput for a 2 step or something. We already have a rev limiter built into the ECU.

Re: MSD 6BTM ignition.

our ecm's pull timing as boost comes on as a matter of principle, it does not wait on detonation. it also has built in rev limiters. thus there is no need for a BTM or a L model msd
