go with a local builder, that way when i breaks you dont have to ship it back to get fixed.

There is some logic to this.

When I decided to get a motor built, I chose McCoy's shop. One of the reasons I went with them is they were 'reasonably' close to home - 575 miles as it turns out.

I had them ship me my motor, but after 1,300 miles the crank bearings left the building. We ended up taking the truck to his shop so he could fix the built motor and reinstall it. That's when I went nutz and really upgraded parts.

BTW, McCoy stood by his motor and repaired it at no additional cost to me. Since then I thrashed it quite a bit and it sounds and runs perfect!

you blow your motor in one week? i just went for a ride in your truck last weekend and it felt pretty good. i agree with a local builder but most shops tell me they dont warranty turbo motors. even if they blow in a 500 miles. i wont take my truck to somebody that wont guarantee there work. good luck with your motor

yup the motor went and it went pretty quick, its weird i diddnt really see it coming it just started making noises so i drove it home and it now sits, it still runs, but sounds horrible, the last drive will be to get the motor pulled. tomorrow i am going to prob cut the oil filter to see what i can find. i want my new motor to be strong, i dont want berring problems so im going to 4 bolt mains for sure. why do these trucks have such duribility probs? gn's dont have problems like sy ty's do why is that?

Did they find why this happened ?

Yep. Tolerences were too tight. Engine had great oil pressure, just not enough volume under boost.

Now my pressure is lower, but obviously it's getting the volume it needs.:D

Any idea why your stocker blew? How many miles and what kind of boost were you running? Was it knocking?

Was that a .10 made ?

Not sure what you mean by this?

I can tell you Jerry McCoy didn't tell me the specifics. Just what I posted above.

I say go with someone that has been proven to know these trucks. If you are going to put up the cash, mine as well go with a known builder/shop, such as RPM or McCoy. You can basically drop off the truck and never have to worry about the builders knowledge...is he going to do this right, or this right, what about this...personally, i'd go mad thinking about it. Peace of mind with motor builds goes along way with me.

Machine shops almost never touch a STD crankshaft. When they machine an old crankshaft they get it down to .10 or more using oversize bearings. So in this case they go by the book and leave the right tolerances between the shaft and the bearing. Only in high perfomance / rev engines they do it with more tolerances
Thats why i asked if your shaft was machined to .10 with oversize bearings

different strokes for different folks. my peace of mind comes from building it myself. it's not that hard if you stay with stock and/or reman crank and proven combos such as srps and eagle hbeam. as for the bearing clearance thing i just ground the crank 10/10 and got 10/10 bearings... mine is holding together pretty well; i don't rev the shit out of it but why would I need to?

i hear ya, but i was talking more along the lines of machine work which most people don't do for themselves. as i'm sure you know, motor is only as good as the builder. but yes, nothing is better than doing as much as you can when it comes to working on your own vehicle...in fact, most people suggest it on these things. ;)

Re: motor sugestions needed

most don't do the block work themselves but you can check everything that is done and if something is not perfect then the machine shop should make it good. so it's kind of the same thing... you can be sure it is right.

Hey Matt is that you? The guy I visited with the built motor Syclone in Green Bay close to Lambeau field and the roommate with the Daytona Super60? Man you have terrible luck with these things  Maybe we should get together sometime and go over your truck's tune. Drop me a line sometime.

Theres always Rockford Racecraft in Illinois, which shouldnt be too far. they do intstalls, and when we convert to a turbo V6 we're going to use them.

Re: motor sugestions needed

first question you should ask yourself is what do you want out of your motor. if you're looking for a good dependable motor that has good performance or are you lookin to run, or at least try to run in the 10's or something like that. a 52 with a looser converter on a pretty stock motor is a good combo. i like the reccomendation of using someone somewhat close in case you have trouble. so what are you looking for?
