LS1 Rear Brake Install - With Pictures

Well after my problems with removal of the retaining bolt for the pinion shaft, this install was super easy.

I have put together a web page with the pictures on order of installation. I have not commented the pictures yet, I will do that when I have more time... but for now this will have to do.

This was probably one of the easiest mods I have done to the truck. With the problems that I had with the rear axle I was not able to put it all the way back together yet.. I will have to pull the rear diff, but I will let everyone know when I bleed them and drive it. Should be early week after next.

I performed this same mod on my truck over a year ago, very nice pedal feel. Didnt really have a strong comparison between it and the DRUMS. I know everyone told me that drums held better on the line for BOOST launches, I dont believe it. Mine held just fine at over 8# of boost when I chickened out on the stock transmission holding that much boost with 110k on it.

Personally I think its one of the simplest/cheapest mods someone can do. I'd also suggest stainless braided hoses in the rear to each caliper, from where it splits in front of the LR wheel.

That is the e-brake shoe, it works inside a mini drum that is inside the "hat" of the brake rotor.

All of those parts that are in the picture are of the stock LS1 parts. The only pictures that are there of the Ty parts are when they are on the truck during removal.

Please do not direct link to any of the pages there.

I am pretty excited to see how it drives... personally I am not happy at all with the stock brakes.. the more power I have made the worse it has gotten.

I am looking into something with hopes it is a direct bolt on to the Ty front end... we will see. If that does not work out, I am going to go with the Baer's from the group purchase.

As far as the ABS goes my truck does not have it. I did have the following observation.. the ABS sensor will have to be modified a bit.. it interfere's with the mounting flange when you are bolting up the setup.. I think just trimming the rubber grommet that the sensor is mounted through would probably do the trick.

I am not sure what the skinny is on the ABS... I hear both sides.. all I know is that my truck would not hold 2 psi at the line.. .I took it to the dealer, they supposedly got the air out of it, etc.. I took it back again and they finally gave me my money back.

I took it off and now it will hold 5 psi..

Yes, no issues with the ABS, the sensor itself is to 'THICK' to fit between the axle and the flange for the LS1 car so I had to sand it down a little bit. I removed material on the side that butts up to the flange (not the side that is able to be seen when removing disk. The caliper support flanges are quite a bit thicker for the LS1 car than they are on the DRUM support flanges for our trucks, hence the reason for removing material on the ABS sensor. If you obtain the caliper support flanges off an LS1 car that has Traction Control there are holes in the plates for the sensors (allowing the wiring to go through). I never had any issues, truck holds just fine at over 8# of boost with the disks and the ABS with a PT52 turbo (never had any issues holding with the drums either :wink: )

I haven't found much, the only thing I have seen mention as a swap is converting to the dual piston caliper the new truck have, but they still using 10.5 disc's. The 2wd suspension have a lot more options, but that doesn't do us any good. I am planning on doing the baer/ls1 swap for my truck.
