Lower intake gasket PROBLEM FOUND

I don't think I have a vac leak but I did see a post where someone had a bad intake gasket from the factory. That being said, since I have the upper intake off anyway for an inj change do I go ahead and change the lower intake gasket?

My main concern is creating an oil leak where there is none now.:roll:

Well I'll be darned. Decided what the heck, I'm this far along, manifold is beckoning so I went for it. An what do you suppose I find... And, yup #4 has always has issues.

Whats the best replacement set?

well I say pull the heads and do vortecs. JK Don. I would hit up Mike lee at RPM. actualy I might have a set of victors. Let me see. Give me a few min.

found the set. I got a set with my heads but I bought a complete kit. Either come and get them of I can ship out.

Thanks much, but I want to get this thing back together ASAP so I'll get them locally.

Like I said I've been toying with this motor for a long time and it just never seems right. I've never driven any other Sy so had nothing to go on except my gut but now that I've actually found something I'm actually quite relieved and, on the other hand, angry at GM. Oh well.

Are they any hints on the re-install to avoid this in the future?

Hey Don, I'm about to do the same project (lower intake swap). Any tips for a guy who's never opened his motor before? Do I need to drain all the coolant? I got all the gaskets and I did a lower intake pull only once before (on a different turbo car).

What was your vacuum at idle? I had a similiar problem on my Corvette that took me forever to figure out. (it was a improperly machined aftermarket intake manifold) It wasn't until I put a vacuum guage on it did I figure it out (and even then, no beleived me until the machine shop set up a jig to machine it.)

yes drain the coolant. you'll still seap some from the heads once the intake is off. Overall, its a pretty simple r&r though.

Also if your removing the turbo, the return coolant line will drain a lot of the coolant coming out of the block. Tooky, I am going to guess you no longer have those line with your PTE 51, but you could remove the plug going into the side of the block.

Well I just drained the coolant from the rad drain. But before that my original plan was to check valve adjustment and swap injs. No need to remove the turbo. Bunch of stuff to disconnect on top then remove the upper intake, injs (I already had mine out so don't know if that's required), dist, couple of brackets, upper rad hose, upper heater hose and upper turbo coolant line. Prolly forgot something but that's the main stuff.

If you can get a priority mail package that the gaskets will fit in it will take about 3 days.

:rotf: Shipping is fine. Cheaper than gas for one thing. And because the NHRA Nats are coming this weekend (yes I have tickets) there's no racing for the next two weeks anyway. Then I'm gone for a week. I think we got it handled. I just got a little anxious when I finally found the problem. Just wanna hear this thing run correctly for a change.:roll:
