Lower Intake Destroyed

I bought a Typhoon while in Iraq thinking it only needed a head gasket. I got home three weeks ago to find that it had 4 bent rods and on set of broken rings. I am getting it wrapped up and went to get my heads toe other day to find out that my lower plenum melted apart at the machine shop. WTF??? the top half is fine. I contacted Guy at Rockford racecraft and he said he may have one. If not I am going to need one pronto.

Melted apart? Did they put it in a hot tank thinking that it was cast iron? It should be their job to replace it.

I've put tons of alum parts through the paces powder coating them. Baking the part at 450 plus, hot tank, ect and never seen one "melt" I have seen them warp and need to be re-machined to flat again.

I don't know what the machine shop did but they must have put some serious heat on that part if it actually melted. Melting temp of alum is 1600. If the shop messed it up, they need to replace it. That is a very expensive part to just have to by another.

If you have ever wondered why every time you send a block to the machine shop it comes out with new cam bearing or you have to install new ones yourself its because the chemical they use to clean the cast iron block and heads will eat aluminum.

Its not because they got it to hot it is probably because they cleaned it in the wrong parts washer I would be hitting them up for 250-350 for a new lower intake:2cents:

Does Rockford Racecraft even exist anymore?

Ya know I saw some high priced typhoon parts on ebay today, looked like Rockford Racecraft was selling them.... talk about expensive!

Re: Lower Intake Destroyed

looking at their level of competence with melting an intake id almost want a second opinion on the rods and rest of the motor...

umm I typed in hot tank. Not for powder coating. Huge difference, between caustic soda and what ever process powder coating is.

There she is. My machinist is going to replace it for me. He is knowledgable, and I have used him for my motorcycle engines for well over 10 years. He said a personee he talked to said that some manifolds from the early 90's were not really normal aluminum. I dont know, I just want this project done.

Re: Lower Intake Destroyed

I have welded many lower intakes, they are aluminum. Someone fubared up somehow, if they are making excuses they are just trying to cover it up IMO.
