when i am at idle the motor makes a tap or a tick but its not on every rotation like maybe every 3 seconds or so and it does it loader when in drive with the break on, but once i get above 2000 rpms or so it goes away???

also i cant tell if it is from the back of the motor or the front on the tranny

Re: low rpm tapping?

:2cents: Well our injectors can be noisy, sort-of a random clicking noise. That would be drowned out well before 2000 though. This would come from the top if the engine naturally. Could be a lot of different things if coming from "inside" front or back. Does it change at all when you put it in drive? As you rev to 2000 does the noise taper off or go away just at 2000?:2cents:

Well it doesn't sound like injectors. But not scare ya but I've hard of loose flex plates (tween the crank and torque converter) hopefully someone will chime in on that one or whatever.

Re: low rpm tapping?

that could be it or i just recently had the tranny out and i think the 3 torque converter bolts might be loose themselves, and the noise might be the washers on them?

Weeellll??? Anyway I'm not going there only because I've never had my tranny out. But it does sound like something that needs to fixed soon.

Usually the 3 torque converter bolts don't have washers on them if they are the stock ones. They have the red or pink loc tite on them from the factory. You might have a loose tappet,( rocker arm not tight). When you had the tranny out,did you check the flex plate mounting bolt area for cracks?

no i didnt check for cracks, i guess i should have, and mine are the stock bolts but this isnt the first time they have been out and i didnt put lock tight on them this time so that might be it

i was also thinking it could be a lifter or a rocker arm but i just am not in the mood to pull shit apart lol

Re: low rpm tapping?

Can you tell what side of the engine it's coming from,as that might tell you if it's a tappet or rocker arm?

I'm curious to why that would matter? My engine also makes a tapping sound, the loudest being at idle and it sounds like its coming from the drivers side of the engine. If I kneel down by the front drivers side tire I can hear it pretty well. I always thought it was the rockers or injectors.... :dunno:

Re: low rpm tapping?

check the bolts in the convertor and flexplate area. if it goes away once you rev the engine past 2000rpm and start back when you let of the gas it certainly is coming from that area.

Re: low rpm tapping?

I had an issue with the belt tensioner. It got loose, and caused a strange clicking noise as well. Have a look and see if it is in good alignment.

If you use a 24" long extension so you can get away from the work, you should be able to tell if it's your injectors or rocker arm by listening at each injector and then on the down stream side of the valve cover above the exhaust manfold, make sure you have the extension on the valve cover lip. Listen to each rocker arm. I hope this helps.
