Lousy night at the track....

Just got back from Bandimere. The Sy hasn't been running great the last couple weeks, but seemed to pick it up a little since the last tank of fuel. so tonight, it won't build any boost at the line, the boost peaks and drops off dramatically as the rpms get higher, and it was stumbling slightly in third gear. the plugs, cap, rotor, and wires are only ~10 months old. It was under 80 out so it wasn't too hot. My times were about .5-1.5 seconds slow, and my mph was fully 6mph low. Crap. Unfortunately I don't have a scantool but does anybody have any idea where I should start looking? Boost leak, vaccuum leak, wg adj......

I'm pissed.

Two things about this post made me say "oh my god!"!

1.) 10 months is a long ass time! I have to change my cap and rotor specifically, about once every 3 months. Try pulling the Coil plug off the cap and see what the terminal looks like. If it's not shiny brass then that bad boy needs replacing! The inside of the cap and the rotor are probably worse. If the inside of the cap has carbon deposits all over the brass contacts then it needs replacing in the worst way! (In my opinion).

2.) No scan tool??? The $ I spent on a laptop and datamaster was the best money I spent on my truck, hands down. I know you can pay for those $25 tanks of 93 octane, so if you are tight on cash, don't drive the truck as much and you'll have the $ in no time.

If you have or can get a laptop (the old 32MB P120 my cousin gave me works fine), there is also FreeScan. It doesn't have the logging capabilities of DataMaster, but it will show you all the same values in realtime. I made a cable for under $10 in parts using this schematic or AKM Cables sells them for $35-90, depending on whether you get assembled or kit and with or without the molded ALDL plug on the end.

well goddamn. thanks guys. i guess i'm not used to an auto that uses caps and rotors quite that fast.....

a scan tool is in the works for sure, but i'm doing a tt setup on my mustang, so all my cash resources are going to that project at this time.
