Every February since 1961, fans have flocked to Southern California for one of drag racing’s grandest traditions: the unveiling of new cars, drivers, teams, and sponsorships at the season opener, where teams hope to use the season kickoff as a springboard in their pursuit of a spot in the Countdown to the Championship at the fabled Pomona facility known for its outstanding traction, smooth surface, and record performances. This year’s event marks the kickoff to NHRA’s 60th anniversary season, and it will feature a tribute to Don "the Snake" Prudhomme, nostalgic car displays, and more.
How to Get There: The track is about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. From Interstate 10 east, exit Fairplex Drive or White Avenue and go north; follow signs to Fairplex. From I-10 west, exit Fairplex Drive and go north. The track is about 1 mile north of the interstate. Arrow Highway provides access from the north.

Pomona and dragstrip. Isn't that like Ketchup and Fries?

Too bad Indianapolis doesn't have a round track to race on.

Re: Look me up @ Winternationals!

The track is located at the far end of the LA County Fairgrounds Fairplex. They don't offer weekly racing. For years the track and bleachers were assembled and disassembled for the opening NHRA event, the Winternationals and then again for the final event, the World Finals. The original bleachers were actually the same ones used for the Rose Bowl parade. If you went there any other time of the year it was just a big parking lot with a little timing tower in the corner. It's much different now.....

Re: Look me up @ Winternationals!

Man I started out racing my car at the street-legal drags at Pomona. I had a ton of passes down that track with my 78 Chevy truck and Camaro before they shut it down at the end of 2000 I think it was. I think I missed maybe 3 or 4 street-legal weekends from 1997 til it closed. Good times.

I haven't been to the Winternationals in a few years so if I make it, I will definitely stop by.

Re: Look me up @ Winternationals!

I have spent the last 41 of 41 years living within 5 miles of the track in Pomona (my auto shop is 2 miles north of the track) so the sounds of 4 second dragsters fill my head and bounce off my walls 2 weekends a year.

Re: Look me up @ Winternationals!

Jeremy, I went looking for you on Friday and never found you. I figure you were hiding from the rain or hiding from me :rotf::rotf::rotf:. All I can say Wow they sure change that place since I was last there in the 70's. My wife said, boy this place is really different from the last time we were living near here. Yet with all the changes it is still the same downhill racing.
