Log vs. Header

Guys, I was just wondering what you all think. Im about to get rid of my kb headers for a set of homemade Iron log style manifolds. Im just sick of the kb's breaking and for the fact that its a pain getting to the plugs especially on the passenger side where you have to take off the entire header to just get to the front plug. I cant believe that there would be that much h.p, lost or does the headers make a huge difference? I thought that I read somewhere on here that some company used the stock manifolds and made a ton of power. I just dont see what the big deal is since its all being blown into the turbo. Thanks ahead for your thoughts and opinions.

Re: Log vs. Header

how much power do you want to make? its a little more complicate even though all the exhaust ends up in the same place. logs tend to bring up back pressure faster, causing a turbo to perhaps spool faster. but that back pressure keeps growing and starts to hurt. when it comes to velocity is where tubular starts to run away from logs.

if your wanting for instance 400hp just stick with stock stuff

Re: Log vs. Header

First that stock exhaust manifolds have gone into the 10's a bunch of times. Second, if you look at a lot of the Campbell builds. They use stock manifolds making upwards of 600/700hp of there builds. They also did a test a while back I believe on a mildly built motor and concluded that headers really do by make much more power, might have been 10hp.

There are a few of us looking into building our own headers. I'm one of them, but are going to be slightly different then normal. As soon as I get the truck back in the garage and able to drop the block and heads on for testing ill get to work on it. I have most of the tubing already. I just need to get the stainless flanges.

Check out Clone 94, he's looking into building log style as well.

It really boils down to 3 things. Cost, time, and effort.

Cost: if done yourself with someone to weld them up it can cost under $500.

Time: if you have the time to spare and test fit, and mock them up and make changes as problems rise.

Effort: most people don't put a lot into custom home made stuff to where it looks good but not only works and holds up, this might be due to time.

Re: Log vs. Header

Guys I cant run stock manifolds because I have brodix heads but what Im thinking about doing is just making my own set of log style headers out of some 1 1/2" to 1 3/4"stainless plumbing supplies . I plan on running anywhere between 25-30lbs of boost. Im looking more into the 700-800h.p. range. Im just completely through with using and dealing with these KB headers. I really do hate them and think that whom ever designed them needs to be punched. LOL. I think you guys get my point.

Lol, I think of him and he post right before me.

Are you wanting log style or equal length? What size turbo? With what dp? Running ac or no? Hydroboost or stock brake booster? Stock steering shaft or aftermarket? All these things come into play when building headers and clearance.

Im just going to build a log style and Im going to build them while the motor is still in the truck so fitment will be correct unlike the kb's.

if you do your homework, log style can be pretty efficient upto anything but an all out build
plus the time saved and money saved by not having to re located or fuss with tight clearances
can be put towards other gofaster parts.
In my case I had lots of room and time to make equal length manifolds so i did...
In hindsight i would have just gone with a properly designed log style.
