Kaboom, screeech

Well, I was doing about 45 on my way to the store when all of a sudden my wheels lock up and I come to a screeching halt (lucky the snow was cleared off the road, or it could have been bad). I immediately thought I'd see guts hanging from my tranny or my prop shaft busted and jammed into the asphalt. Nope, not even a leak. I tried to pop it in reverse because I was only about 5 feet past a parking lot entrance. I was able to back up about 10 feet before it came to a grinding halt. There's definitely lots of noise coming from my rear end. I'm thinking I blew my spider gears or something. I had it towed to a local shop, I won't be able to talk to anyone before Monday, but when I do, what kind of information should I be armed with?

Well if you lost the rear end, now a good time to upgrade to at least a 8.5" rear end.

one way or another you are between 500 and 3K $.............
Well, I'm definitely not gonna be dropping 3k on a rear end, I still have the stock turbo! The idea of throwing in an 8.5" would be nice, I've done some searching and it looks like they come from a 98+ (2k+ if I want rear discs) S10, 5spd, 4wd, and matching our gearing (3.42's right?). Any other thoughts on this, or should I save some money and just rebuild my stocker (what size rear end is stock?) I really don't want to spend more than about $800 installed (does this rule out the 8.5 swap?)

maybe your t-case siezed.
It's a possibility, but I've been having the low speed tight turn bucks for a couple of years now. Flushed my rear end and put some anti slip additive in it when I got my trans rebuilt and it would still buck under tight turns. I'll find out Monday afternoon and keep everyone posted.

The bucking is a result of t-case problem; not the rear end.

Re: Kaboom, screeech

If it isn't the t-case then you probably had the cross shaft come out of the differential. It sounds like the pinion (spider) gears might have siezed on the shaft and broke the retaining bolt, then they let the shaft fall out. When the shaft comes out it will jamb against the pinion gear or the inside of the housing and lock up everything. Here is one that I removed from a full size Chevy truck. http://community.webshots.com/photo/55410292/55411032HBFFwp If you want a stock replacement you can use the rear end from any 4X4 S series truck with the same 3.42 gear ratio. The rear end in the 2 wheel drive trucks is 4 inches narrower than yours.

I hope I don't sound retarded for saying this, but I can just get an awd astro/safari t-case can't I?

Re: Kaboom, screeech

If you want do end up using the stock rear and want to rebuild it, I have a full rebuild kit for 3.42's kicking around; ring, pinion, all bearings, shims, seals, etc. Cheap.

Re: Kaboom, screeech

Well, they tore apart my rear end and everything was demolished. The gears are all destroyed and the casing is a gonner, but the axles and differential housing is still intact.

Ouch. Good luck getting it back together.

You've got alot of options, ranging from basically throwing a junkyard fresh replacement (maybe $300) in there to putting a fully built 12 bolt / 9" Ford / Dana 60 under there with all new internals (maybe $2500+). So many choices.......

Re: Kaboom, screeech

Well, I got my rear end rebuilt with a new posi unit in it. But my truck still hops real bad when making a tight slow turn. I know Merk said the bucking was from my t-case...but is the bucking a sign that it's going out or what? I really can't afford to be hit with another breakdown right now. Is this thing a ticking time bomb that's gonna grenade like my rear end?
