Intercooler Coolant

Being fairly new to these trucks...As far as the coolant going through the intercooler. Since the coolant is obviously engine temperature, what is the best modification to do here to help other than routing an ice water only tank with the pump. I remember as far as cooling throttle bodies, bypassing the coolant helped, but I figure that would not be the case here...maybe a pump upgrade? THX--R

Remove the metal lines for the IC and route them through the fender so they don't get heated up. $50

Replace the stock pump with a Shurflow or Johnson pump

Upgrade your upper IC but that makes it tight. You can also get in on the group buy from dutchty and get an upgraded lower IC (more volume, better cooling).

Install an alky kit - that makes the biggest difference. Alkycontrol = awesome.

x2, there are plenty of wright ups on all 3. Makes a big difference.

Got an alkykit, but I wasn't sure if running it "all" the time would be ok? Starts around 5psi ends at 12psi currently

Some guys run Water Wetter ... I just picked some up at the store yesterday actually , I have never ran it before ---

I hope the intercooler coolant isn't engine temp( with engine temp being 165-200 deg). If it is, you're doing something wrong.;) My intercooler is *cold* to the touch when its cool outside. I believe in running a larger heat exchanger and stock sized intercooler(with maybe the intake side opened up if possible for better flow). My original pump is hotwired and running strong.

The cooling system for the intercooler is independent of the engine cooling system, so it 'shouldn't' be at engine temperature. Hotwiring the intercooler pump to always be on when the key is on and replacing the lines between the intercooler and lower radiator with heater hose are probably the two biggest gains per $. Since the stock intercooler lines are small diameter, metal, and routed right over the engine, the water heats up on the way to the intercooler. 3/4" radiator hose routed away from the engine will flow more coolant and keep it cooler.

I am under the impression the stock unit is inefficent and struggles to keep air temps cool from the radiating turbo and engine heat.

I purchased a air to air intercooler to compensate for all the losses i read about.

I have a nice write up on the air to air vs stock unit

Powertuneplus has a different opinion:

"The stock Garrett "air to water" intercooler is actually a great performing unit, so good in fact that when a local Syclone friend of mine upgraded to a $2000 custom full-size "air to air" intercooler, he didn't experience any performance gains whatsoever... (Imagine that!) "

Turbo blanket will help keep the CAC from getting so damn hot on the underside.....plus there is an intercooler blanket on the market too.

How often do you add to the intercooler? Thanks for the help, I'm a newbie to the forum. I bought a 1992 white&stray Typhoon on 12/29/14 and trying to get info on maintenance.
