Newbie with dreams coming back at you;

I am in the Los Angeles area and want to know who you would recommend to do a great job at changing my Black Syclone to a Red Syclone? Any SoCalSyTy guys out there?

What kind of paint and the exact color name do you suggest?

What is the Marlboro Syclone color?

How many coats should I get of paint and clear coat?

I also want to shave my doors and tailgate, what do you think?

Where can I get a good crome grill? Your thoughts on crome vs. black plastic.

Any tips and points of detail that I should bring to the painter attention, or other things that should be taken care of while I'm at it?

How much do you think I can expect to pay?

How about you people back East, any difference in price for prime paint?

If you have any pictures of red Syclones please post them. I think red should have been an optional color.

:D

I think there are 2 Syclones in SoCal that were painted red. The Marlboro Sys were painted PPG "Hot Licks Red". If you want to go with the official 1992 GM color, you would get Apple Red. One thing to consider is getting a layer of silicone or something between the body and the cladding, to prevent it from rubbing through the paint and rusting.

Wow you are talking about a huge project here! Make sure you really want to do this because it is going to cost big bucks and take a lot of time. Firewall should be painted cab inside and out should be painted, alond with the bed, inside of fenders, cladding needs to come off list goes on and on and on.

To do it right, I would guess at least 9-10K.

Figure 10k minimum to do it right and disassemble and reassemble your self. my advice plan on replacing fenders and doors and the tail gate they like to rust.

Re: I wanna paint my Syclone Red???

All,

We applied 3-4 coats of color and 3-4 coats of clear. Used PPG Hot Licks Red, same as the Marlboro. All cladding was removed and painted. Some type of flex agent was added to the paint for the cladding. Opted not to paint the firewall, same as the Marlboro's. Cost to remove and reinstall engine would be prohibitive. If I had to do it all over again, I would have changed the style of the door handles. Something that would fit flush.

Here is the link to pictures on the Sportmachines website.

P.S. Marty, thanks for the mention.

Silicone all the way under the cladding, or just at the contact points?

Just at the contact points. A Sy owner in AK had this done in the mid-'90s, and it seemed to work quite well.

Thanks Timbo for your fast reply. My truck is getting a new engine right now and I thought while at it I should paint it. Then I came up with changing the color. Why not? Maybe becaues it is so expensive would be a good reason. I am still looking into reputable painters and body shops. One sugestion I heard today was Farrari red. What do you think about T-tops? Who made the Marlboro's? :D

Re: I wanna paint my Syclone Red???

ASC did the Marlboro roof. Ferrari has quite a few shades of red, so if you want to do Ferrari paint, you'll have to do some research as they changed up their paint quite a bit over the years.

Re: I wanna paint my Syclone Red???

Does ASC have a web sight? Is that the brand name of the tops or are they a body shop or something? I did not ask the guy who suggested the Farrari red what shade. Maybe the same as the one on the cover of Road and Track that was featured in a comparison to with the Syclone. Would the T-tops reduce the strength and integrity of the truck? Also, thanks to everyone else who posted a reply. If I ever get it done, or my truck gets out of the shop I'll post pics.

The roof were one off, well actuall they made 11. The Roof is made of Kevlar / Carbon Fiber for strength. As far as strength, It's not nearly as strong as a stock roof. I am considering doing the same roof on my project, but cost may prevent it. Somewhere around $10,000 to 15,000 to do it right. Some people may think that i am wrong but there is a bunch of fab work that has to go into this project.

I could save you a bunch of time and money. Just buy my Marlboro sy and you have a Red truck with a removable roof.

Marty, Marty, Marty, you went this far with the GT, you might as well put a sunroof in and do it the way you want it, just in case you end up giving me the Marlboro. ;)

Hay Tim,

you crack me up - that is exactly why i have spent so much money on this truck. Sooner or later i have to say no. Maybe i need to get some lessons from my wife, she's pretty good at saying no.

Here is a picture of what my truck used to look like right before I got it. It was painted black right before I took ownership of it.

You guys are fantastic!!! Thank you very much for your input. Is the Typhoon really Farrari red? I now have talked with two body shops and the first guy told me 10-20 for changing the color, removing the bed, shaving the doors, tailgate, and t-tops etc. The second guy said about 9 but did not want to do the t-tops. I was thinking about the strength issue like you mentioned but thought I could buy a kit and have it installed for a couple bucks. After looking at the SYBORG, (thats all in caps) I see what really must go on for a total project. Just looking at those photos has helped me with ideas and what I will not be able to do or afford. You are the SYBORG and an outstanding craftsman to say the least. What a job!!! I want my engine bay to look like yours with all the billet pulleys and a big radiator. Where did you get all that stuff? Which dual electric fan did you go with? Are you really getting rid of your Marlboro Syclone? (He offered it to me first) Why, if you are? I think you may be right about saving money going that way. I think I am in for about 30-40 for paint, engine, exhaust, suspension etc. as I am going now.

Hail the SYBORG!!! Do you really want to sell the Marlboro Syclone? You are probably right about saving money by just buying one already complete. It seems like no one ever gets back the money they put in their hot rod. :D
