Re: how'd you get hooked?
I was senior in HS when they came out, I glazed over them in the magzines, I was hooked on Corvette's. I never saw the Ferrari vs Syclone test and I really didn't pay that much about 1/4 mile times, I had a friend tell me once about he was going to buy a Syclone, because they were faster Corvettes ( I didn't beleive him, he wasn't a car guy at all so I just let it go without an arguement)
In 1992 my friend (different friend than above) started street racing his 86 Mustang 5.0, so I became very acquainted with 1/4 mile times, I also realized the car magazine aren't bible of 1/4 mile times either. Later that year we ran into a Syclone, my friend high 13 sec 5.0 was annilated, 5 car lengths by about 50mph. Before he raced it, I suspected it was a Syclone even though the stickers were off, I just expected it to be like the 454SS pig we raced previously. I saw that Syclone a few more time over the next year or two, but it left quite an impression that day and have followed them since. I told myself, if I ever buy a pickup truck this is the one.
[the above is how I became hooked, the rest is fluff on how I became a Sy owner]
In 1995, I found the syty.org, I started reading that periodically, I had planned to buy a Ty for daily driver when I graduated in 1997 from college. I always had a conflict though, I had my Corvette and I thought the Corvette was going to be a mainstay, so I had buy something practical.
In 1997, I graduated but SyTy prices were still very high, (20-20K for a Ty, very high teens for a Sy). I initially put off buying one and eventually I decided that I would buy my wife a Ty for her next car.
In 1999, somebody totalled my wife's prelude in a parking lot. I had planned to buy her a Ty within the next year, but all of sudden I need to buy a car within a month or so. I looked feverishly but their was nothing local and the logistics just weren't going to work, because I getting married in 2 months. I was disappointed so I stop looking at SyTy for a while.
In 2000, I saw the Lexus TT vs Sy video on the Supraforums. I found SyTy.net and my interest was rejunvenated.
In 2001, I had bought a house a year earlier and became I needed a vehicle a couple time a year for trip to my local dump. I started looking at Toyota truck's for about one day, but then I remembered the Syclone, the prices had drop enough that I could convince my wife. So a Sy was to become my driver. After 9 months of looking, I bought one. Less than a month after I bought it, I gave up the driver Sy idea. I just liked it and the boosted launches too much. I decided my Corvette would be the one that I would eventually sell
When I bought the my Sy, I had only test driven one other Sy before and it ran like crap. The first time I hoped on my Sy off the line, I realized why this truck had killed my my friend Mustang. Shortly after, I brought it over to friend who had own the Mustangs. I told him I bought 91 GMC S15. He recognised it immediately (it was in the dark and we were 100 feet away) and the envious look on his face was priceless.
