Re: Heater Ac Fan Speed???

It's the black plastic "clam shell" looking deal on the top of the box for the AC with a four wire connector going to it. You can see it above the orange handled screwdriver in the pic below:

Best bet to get one cheap would be a junkyard. Pull the plug, remove two screws and it's a done deal in less than a minute...

Change the relay on top of the heater/AC box

My bet is on the relay like kentuc mentioned. I have had them go bad on several trucks. It is located on the blower housing. It's in the picture that Mike posted at the lower left.

To diagnois relay for no spped other than 'high': Key off. Take jumper from battery B+ to Dark blue wire on resistor. Fan should run on high. Yes= relay OK No= relay bad.

If relay OK, disconnect resistor connector. Turn key on. Mode in A/C normal. put blower switch in far left (low). Check Brn/wht for power at resistor connector.
switch in next speed (M1) check tan for power at resistor connector.
switch in next speed (M2) check lt blu for power at resistor connector.

If any of the above fail, its the dash (fan speed) switch.
This can be checked with a test light, or voltmeter.

If the above is OK:
Reconnect resistor connector.
Key and Mode OFF.
Take jumper from B+ to each of the above wires. You should be able to get all the speeds, one wire at a time, including 'high' (dk blue wire).
If this second test is OK ( all the speeds available) then fan speed switch in dash is bad.

This has been the most common failure for me on numerous S-10s. (Fan speed switch)

Good luck.

I think I've owned over 10 1st gen S-10s.

thank you for your help, it WAS the relay,
now i dont feel so bad about buying it cause it will fix my problem

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

Re: Heater Ac Fan Speed???

got a picture where its located?

Sorry to bring back this thread, but I'm having the same problem, and none of the pictures in this thread show up. I'm looking for a pic showing what the relay looks like and where it is.

Re: Heater Ac Fan Speed???

Thanks for the updated pic. I see that "clamp shell" looking thing on top of the heater box on the passenger side just in front of the firewall. Now is the fan relay the boxy looking thing with a silver top just to the left of the blower resistor?

Re: Heater Ac Fan Speed???

Does anyone have the GM part number on the fan/blower relay. The one in the lower corner of the picture above.

Original old crusty one out (note the GM # on it):

New one in (made in Mexico now):

And now I have all fan speeds

Re: Heater Ac Fan Speed???

AAAARRGGGHHH!!! I wish I had read this thread first. I spent most of my morning trying to remove my dash, because I was told that the resistor was behind the glove box. Now I have spent the rest of my time putting my dash back together. I took my resistor off and it does not apear to be burnt so I will test it first. Thank you all for your help. next time I will check here first.
