Head casting numbers....

Hey!

When it comes to Vortec heads, casting number 772 looks to be the ones to look for correct?

What about stock rebuild heads? Any particular casting #s that flow better than stock, but wouldn't need the intake mod?

Any good links describing the options?

Thanks guys!

Re: Head casting numbers....

The 772 are a common older cast .I belive 2001 and up have had some revisions to the vortecs vs the 96 style .RPM sells them for $99 each ,thats hard to pass up for brand new heads .If you are going to spend the money on stock lb4 or l35 heads , just spend the little extra and get vortecs .

Re: Head casting numbers....

Thanks for writing! Don't know if y'all have seen this already but here's what I was looking at...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...K:MEWA:VRI&viewitem=&item=180070088697&rd=1,1

Any who, these guys are right down the road from me and say they have any casting numbers I would want. They appear to be locally reputable and this promo seems like a heck of a deal. And no shipping!

My motor sucks (more like wheezes) so it will get a re-do soon. Interest in this stuff comes and goes for me so I'm not sure how ambitious I'll be when it comes down to just gitten 'er done or spending some extra $$$ for something I probably won't really need anyway. If I can get a 12 something down the track semi annually I'd be happy...

Vortecs make a BIG difference? Any PNs on the late model heads?

Re: Head casting numbers....

i'm not sure if you were planning to buy the heads in the ebay auction, or just buy another set from the seller, but the ones in that auction arent vortec heads

i'm sure you know this already, but just in case, compare the vortec combustion chambers in this pic i snapped before i put them on my truck to the ones in the auction (wasnt letting my post a pic so a link will do)

vortec combustion chamber

the casting number on my heads are 12557113

Re: Head casting numbers....

Nice heart shape to em huh?!

No I wasn't going to buy the exact ones in the auction - sounds like I come to them with a casting number and they either have em ready to go or do 'em up. So that's where I need a lttle help - specifically are any casting #s morepreferabler than others when it comes to being able to pick and choose. Stock upgrade or going the vortec route...

So far I have,,,

Stock Upgrade - ???
Vortec - 113, 772

Any other notables? 'preciate it!

Re: Head casting numbers....

Your going to want the heads re-drilled to match your syty intake before you have them built . Were you going to take off your intake and bring it to them to match everything up ?

When you can buy vortecs from almost all the vendors here , who have done it many many times , why not buy from someone who can gaurantee that they are doing the right thing ?

Re: Head casting numbers....

Wow you're form Holiday! Right up the road from me in Clearwater...Happy new year neighbor!

If I were to indeed go with the vortecs then sure, I would send my intake off to RPM. Even though the procedure looks straight forward enough for any decent machine shop to tackle, I agree it's nice to have the experience of a place like RPM to relieve any concern it's done correctly.

Haven't looked into it lately but when I did, I seem to remember a figure of around ($400) to do the vortec mod? So along with the bare heads they sell, add in some quality components, a valve job, shipping, and you know how it all adds up fast. What do you think a total shipped figure would be from your line of thought?

RPM? If you're reading, can you comment?

But my original question also included the case of a stock rebuild - if I go with no mod are there any notable casting #s preferred over others? I personally don't feel the need to have the fastest Syclone on the block. It's a Syclone, the mystery, rumor and reputation already precedes itself even before they know anything about MY numbers. Let em think what they may...

Sure grandpa loves to drive the Corvette, but how often is he gonna really let er rip? And when he does there's probably room left between the pedal and the floorboard. Similar case here - I'm satisfied to enjoy the truck for what it is really. A fresh motor even with the stock, stock heads will be light years from where I am right now - make it a good solid runner...
