Gasket ?'s

I have removed my stock turbo to install my new pte.

The question is, is there a gasket that goes from the turbo exhaust to the exhaust manifold? or does it just bolt on?

Also, is the a gasket for the oil return line? Is it possinle to just use copper gasket maker?

Just wondering what you guys have done.

Thanks.

Nope, just bolt it onto the manifold. Don't forget anti-seize on the manifold bolts and bolts that go through the DP flange into the exhaust housing.

The PTE flange included in the DP kit has a gasket with it (let me know if yours was missing).

The stock flange gasket is GM #15637655

Both ends of the Precision flange to stock flange adapter will need a gasket.

make sure never to use silicone on the drain line b/c it will often break off and clog the oil passages inside the turbo bearing housing. Keep in mind they are about the size of a grain of sand so they clog easily.. then when your turbo breaks and you sent it back for warranty the manufactor will see the silicone and tell you to get lost.

it wasnt aimed at you john, more so just an FYI b/c i have seen plenty of people use silicone on the drain not thinking much of it.

have a nice holiday!

Re: Gasket ?'s

Just wanted to ask the question again for a stock setup. Where are there gaskets and where not? I have a pesky leak somewhere around the front rigth side of the engine so I am trying to locate it. Thanks for the help.

On the turbo? There's copper washers on the water connections and on the turbo oil feed fitting (not on the braided line side!). On the drain there is a gasket that goes between the turbo and the oil return. I got a gasket that matched it from a Mitubishi dealer by having them cross reference a 1992 Eclipse GXT-T. There's two gaskets in their system, one on the turbo end and the other on the oil pan side.... I can't remember which was the one that perfectly matched our application.

Also, the drain pipe has a section of silicone tubing to connect to the oil pan, I got a 1-foot section of silicone heater hose (3/4") from a Freightliner service dept. Cost me like $7.

Thanks for that. What about the exhaust? This thread talks about collector gaskets, etc. I am just trying to figure out where gaskets go for the exhaust.

I always like to fit gaskets on mating flanges. I know GM didn't fit them to head side or Turbo side exhaust manifolds, but that is when everything is new and flat. When exhaust components heat cycle over extended periods of time things change and parts sometimes warp. You only have to look at exhaust manifolds that have been in service for a number of years, you often need to use spreaders or heat it up to get them on/off. Unless you resurface the faces to like new condition, I think I would be tempted to fit a gasket or Hi-temp silicone as suggested. Not sure if Hi-temp is red or gold, cant remember off hand. Gaskets are available from many sources (plenty for a T3 on ebay for example) Just get a good quality one made from premium material. I'm not speaking from great turbo or SyTy experience here, but from general industry (Nuclear in my case) leaks aren't generally tollerated. In a perfect world, two perfectly flat and lapped flanges bolted together properly 'shouldn't' leak. But unfortunately most of us don't operate in a perfect world and also don't like to do things twice if it leaks. The flip side is that a gasket is the weak link in any joint. I think I would be tempted to go for a thin embossed shim type gasket. I'm sure there are many who have fitted no gasket and have never had a leak though. Weigh up the condition and flatness of the mating faces before deciding.
