So I have a small dilemma and need some opinions. When I repaint my Ty, I really want to do flush door handles like Mattw did. One thing I have an issue with is that on top of the fact that I have never even painted a car, I have never really done any real body work. So fabbing all of this wold seem like a pretty damn big deal.

Now, I do happen to like my escutcheons but thought it would be a nice time to do the flush handles. I have several friends that can help me do this job but it seems it would take a LOT of work. Do you think I should suck it up and do it or just roll with the escutcheons.

Pros (for me) for Escutcheons:
1. they look nice against the cladding. Take away that loneliness of the door handle.
2. easy to put back on.
3. if broken, can be fixed or replaced easily?

Cons
1. Don't look quite as good (but close) as the flush handles
2. Have to deal with sticking them back on correctly

Pros for flush handles
1. look super clean and modernized

Cons
1. Intense fabrication (for me anyway)
2. if I get t-boned, that will be a lot of wasted work.
3. linkage may not line up well.

I never really liked them on the truck. But they grew on me, and now I think the truck looks better with them than it would without them.

However, I have a white/grey...What color is the the truck?

Go this route even cleaner and much easier to do. Take your time welding though.

I would never go shaved. You cant race at the track plus it looks too sport truck for my taste.

he asked for opinion and heres mine, shaved = ricer , i dont care how nice a car looks at first glance if its missin door handles i aint even stoppin to look at it. i personally like the look of the escutcheons (but then again i like the 92 seat better also).

no , there is a remote to pop the door open. instead of a door handle there is a electric solenoid that pops the door release.

Escutcheons are just another thing that make a Ty a Ty for better or worse (I think better personally).

Otherwise, well, as folks have mentioned before, it's a Jimmy with a nice body kit or even worse.. "What, did they run out of parts at the factory??!!"

Just my 2 cents..

Thank you for answering that....opinions are like a--holes everybody has one. I can't wait to see it with the cladding on it personally

Have you ever thought of flush door handels with modified escutcheons? Might defeat the purpose of being flush, but I think the escutcheons belong with the 92s. If I bought a 92 with them missing I would need to find a set.:2cents:

I personally do not like the escutcheons. I removed them from my truck and will be putting the newer style flush door handles on my truck before it gets painted.

I have liked those door handles for a long time. I have two donor doors sitting in my garage.

I had zero issues with the linkage lining up. If you do go with flush handles go very slow with the welding as mentioned before. The smallest amount of heat will warp that door panel. You basically want to do 4 tacks.. give them 15 sec to cool.. Then do 4 more tacks... repeat. Keep checking to see how hot the surrounding metal is getting.. If you can't touch the metal then stop and let it cool.

If I do it, I will not weld it, I was thinking of flanging the new handle bucket and panel bonding them in.

I am not sure there is enough material to make a good flange at the back of the door.

I did this on one of my typhoons, I really like the look, it was not that hard to do but auto body is a back ground for me.
In your case, I will consider just leaving it stock and take your time lining them back when throwing them on. I am not saying it takes an expert to do it, but this being your first major paint and body deal, make it easier on yourself.:tup:

We would flange the handle side, not the door. But yeah I get what you're saying, don't want to make this a one year project. This realistically should be done by mid June or so.

Marty recommended them to me and I think they are the future of the way cars will be done .
