Flexplate/starter issue

Ok. So I have the engine installed and Im doing the the final little things before I fire this thing up and while I am underneath I look up at the starter and the starter pinion shaft is a good inch away from the flexplate. There is no way its gonna engauge it. I took the starter back where I got it and they say its the correct one. My truck did not have one with it when I got it so I dont have anything to compare it to. Are there any other starters with larger pinion gears? I really hope I was not given the wrong flexplate and I have to take the transmission back out.

pretty sure your flex plate is wrong. how many teeth does it have? what is the diameter?

The flexplate is what looks like maybe a 1/4" larger than the torque converter. What are the chances of a different starter working? Ill count the teeth on it now.

153 is the number I got on the flexplate

Stock flex plate is 166 teeth...i may be off 1...but its around there

You got 15 teeth to few, you need 168 teeth...

Looks like I will just have to get a starter for a 153 tooth flywheel. Just will have to go with an inline mount instead of the stagered mount. I was sweating it. I so didnt want to pull the trans out.
