First time engine startup w/ new cam

Hello. does anyone have any advice regarding initial programming and first time startup? The cam is brand new, and the manufacturer suggests a 30 minute run at 2500-3000 rpm to prpoerly break in the cam and lifters. herin lies the problem. The engine is a 3.1L v-6 turbo using a '749 ecm, 28# injectors. I have my choice between a sunbird bin or a sy-ty bin to start, What I could use advice with is to where i should begin with fuel and spark tables, so as to be able to safely run the motor at theese speeds. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not asking for a total setup, just enough to start a generic motor with some generic timing and fuel maps.

thanks

Hi Tim,
Can you put your stock injectors back in until you're done with the break-in of the cam? Using cylinder volume-to- injrctor size ratio, you'd be close on the tune with the stock bin and 21lbs injectors on a 3.1L.
Just a thought.

Tim, you mentioned using a 7749. Does your engine have a distributor?
I thought the 3.1 had coilpaks, in which case, I would have leaned toward a 7730 with the turbo granprix code. Anyway, just curious.
Thx,

Hello.
the 3.1 I have is actually a 2.8 stroker. 2.8block, 3.1 crank, so it does indeed have a distributor. as to the stock injectors, I went as far as to pick up another ecm from a 3.1, it's a 16196397 flash pcm, p6 family, out of a 95 grand prix. I was just going to wire that one on for the breakin, but all of the connections are different on both ends of the harness, since all of the sensors are of a newer design. This isn't really that big if a deal, but i'd like to wire the motor only once if possible. the stock injectors would be off of a 2.8, and i'm not sure of the size. do you think the 28s will be too big? i currently have a 2 bar map, and 2 bar bins, but was hoping to upgrade to a 3 bar setup once my feet got a little wetter. hence the 28s.
the other thing is that I have a romulator on the way, and could at least tune in the range the motor is in for the break in, and would rather start off rich anyways. So you know, the motor is mounted on a homemade dyno stand, and won't be in the vehicle until i'm sure at least half of the major bugs are worked out if I could just find a good way to put a load on the engine on the stand. I do have a 30 k.w. generator......

Thank you all for your time and help

I origilally selected the '749 based upon the same thought: displacement per cylinder. it's out of a turbo sunbird, 2.0L . the 3.1 was only marginally larger, which i was going to compensate for by raising the fuel pressure or using slightly larger injectors, perhaps the same perctenage more flow as the percentage increase in displacement, if that makes any sense. but a friend of mine donated a set of 28# injectors from his LT1 camaro. I figured that the tune would be close enough, perhaps even good (well, as good as stock) and I would have a pretty conservative base program to build my performance tune on. I replaced the 27c128 with a at29c512, allowing me to have four seperate bins, dash selectable.

I still haven't really clearly seen where to set the wastegate control in the bin. any clues to offer?

Thanks again.

The homebuilt stand sounds cool. It sounds like you'll be running pretty rich with 28's and the stock bin. But you seem to have planned for that. Diddling the fuel pressure helps, but has its limitations.
As for spark tables, I think the Syclone (torky low rpm six) might
be a closer starting point. That's just a guess, not knowing your cam profile. Just curious.. What turbo are you using? Please keep us posted.
Cheers,

Turbo is a garrett off of a ford merkur, to3, i can't remember the turbine and compressor specs for the life of me, but i'll write them down. I just got my romulator yesterday, i think there was a bad connection in the chip end of the cable, but it's working now. I had an idea for the cable, crimp on a 28 pin connector, as on a hard drive cable right onto the ribbon, then cut the carrier in half with a hacksaw blade, file to fit. the ESC section then stays in place full time. i didn't have the crimp-on connector, but i did manage to cut the carrier and make an adapter by cutting a hard drive cable to 28 pins, hot gluing the connector, then wiring and soldering to a 40 pin chip socket on a proto board from radio shack. seems to be working well.

Thanks for the boost table!

currently building a air to water intercooler.....

the motor goes in a fiero, light weight, does this mean i'd want the timing to come in quicker?

Thanks again to all.
