Re: First Test On E85 ( Bad Ass Syclone)

I talked to John Meany yesterday asking him about e85 tunning on my big stuff, he has a E85 fireware or configuration out but he is releasing a E85 kit in a couple months
.

John's been around a long time. Very good and knowledgable. Been up to his house with a buddy from TX with his twin turbo sbc for dyno. Neatest trip I've been on in a long time. Been several years back now. Met alot of good contacts those several days.
That'll be a neat plug and play sensor option for the E-85 what a great deal there! Hope that trickels down to every aftermarket ECM.. with a 0-5V input so you can set the Injector DC to match the %of E85. That'd be sweeeeeet :)

I know XFI has a similar piece in the works. Not sure about DFI...

If they can "dumb" it down to the older FAST system I'd use it in my Camaro this summer and see what kind of results I can get with it. Last year I was only at 58%DC on my injectors. I'd have enough to make up the quantitiy I'd need to run E-85. All my fuel system is good for 85 anyhow.
Not much savings here... E-85 is 3.18gal in indiana. :(

Interesting...E85 makes you go faster. Is it the amount of alcohol? I'm dumb when it comes to fuel formulas and performance...

If mrsy can get a good performance tune on E85, it should revolutionize the performance for the Sy/Ty for sure.

Ive done some calkulations on a dyno sim program, with the new heads and some more squeze its amasing what that truck is gona be able to do..

Now its only to wait untill good wheather then we´ll se if my program is near the nrs running in the computor..

I guess if the 8.98 record stood undefeted for 2 years and still stands, the next one is to be permanent??

e85 is good but race fuel is still better when providing more power, since e85 demand more fuel delievery and bigger injectors, you can put more power through the same injectors with race fuel.

However E85 is a looooot cheaper in Sweden than RF.

Good to see Robert adding more movies, just surfed in on youtube and I saw the new e85 movie, how much boost will he be running with the higher compression? Is the though to use E85 so you can still use more timing and boost / same as last year and still have higher compression, if it works it would really be nice and fast :)

The converting to E85 fills a couple of demands for Robert, the prize on RF is a "joke" and for milage, who cares as long as it haul´s A$$ :D the engine runs much cooler almost to cool, and the tendensy to withstand pings gives Higher compression and Higher boost.

Despite the big turbo the engine realy spools up fast and seems to deliver as much HP on 15-17 psi boost as it did on 25-30 psi last year :O I think R is aiming for somewhere abowe 25 psi

The main consern is ti cut good 60`times and the rest is history :D

Re: First Test On E85 ( Bad Ass Syclone)

I would recommend that before anyone jumps on the E85 bandwagon, do a little research on the fuel.

Drawbacks:
1) E85 is only cheap in places where the government subsidizes the crap out of it. It is $2.54 here in Nebraska. Actual cost at the pump should be about $4/gallon or so. The next two drawbacks (below) pretty much negate any price benefit here.

2) Compared to gasoline which is largely isooctane, ethanol sucks as a fuel from an energy stand point. The heating values (both higher and lower values) are about 35% lower than isooctane. This means you?ll need to burn that much more for any equivalent power output.

3) The stoichiometric AFR is significantly lower than gasoline (9:1 vs. 14.7:1) so plan on crappier mileage too.

4) E85 is much more corrosive than gasoline. Forget about standard steel fuel lines and rubber fittings.

Advantages:
1) Ethanol has a somewhat higher octane rating than pump gas. This hardly makes up for the previous three facts.

2) Ethanol has a higher latent heat of vaporization (it cools the charge air better when it changes from liquid to gas phase) than gasoline.

For boosted applications such as ours, why not run gasoline at the injectors and spray E85 (methanol would be even better) after the intercooler?

Re: First Test On E85 ( Bad Ass Syclone)

I don't think its nearly that black and white, I've been researching it for about 6 months on and off and have come across countless people running it on stock fuel systems with tunes and injectors. In my search for fuel lines I actually ended up with a poly fuel line that not only did I talk to people running nearly 100psi of fuel pressure under boost but running the same lines for 2-3 years on E85 with no problems. My entire fuel system is able to handle E85 now.. fuel cell, all fittings and y blocks, pump etc etc I am sending the fuel rails to be anodized this week and its going together.

Now fuel consumption.. yes its 30-40% more fuel, but if your running E85 on a turbo build chances are your not really comparing it to 91-93 oct your comparing it to 110-116 where the prices are crazy. But in my case I had to buy everything anyways and side by side comparison I only spent another 150-200 dollars total to get everything ready for E85.. Larger injectors (same price or 5 bucks total), larger pump..130+ rated for E85, anodizing 30 dollars total in anything that was bare and having to run -12,-10 feed lines and y blocks..Now that being said all in on my fuel system I have roughly 1800 dollars but it should support 550-650+ RWHP on E85 with plenty of a safety zone. Later when the big stuff unit comes out I'll be running e85 on the track and pump on the streets but for now I'm going to run pump gas until his conversion unit comes out.
